Another student loan question
« on: May 17, 2010, 03:32:57 PM »
Hey, for 2nd year as an independent i can take out a max of $10,500 for the stafford loan bit. Clearly this is not enough for my tuition yet alone rest of my fees. What other loans will you guys be using to get the rest of money needed.

Are gradplus loans only for grad students? What are other options, i would like to avoid private lenders.

Parent Plus, if that's an option for you.

Edit: I also believe if you are over 25 you can get Parent plus loans yourself, or something similar.

January 2012 - FLR(M)

Have you paged through the "Student Aid: Funding Education beyond High School?" pdf? I've found it to be somewhat helpful in spelling out some of the details regarding federal funding.  I'm not sure on your specific circumstances, but here's the link: http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/attachments/siteresources/Funding_Education_Beyond_HS_2010-11.pdf

For Stafford, postgraduate students are allowed to borrow up to $20,500.  For the rest, I'm applying for scholarships (25% fee reduction), and paying on my own.  I'll only take GradPLUS if I feel like I need to, since they have a higher interest rate and start accruing interest as soon as the loan is disbursed.

Are you transferring to a UK school to finish your undergraduate degree? Because I see in the chart on page 30 of the pdf I originally posted that the maximum of $10,500 is for "Independent Undergraduate Students".  But from your other posts, it sounded like you were going for postgraduate studies...Have I misread things?
