Bra straps are OK if you're small enough to have thin straps. But when you need all the uplift you can get, well ...

 ;D  My problem exactly...

For me it's just that the exposed straps looks a little sloppy.  I wouldn't mind so much if I were going out shopping or to the pub, but for a formal event it just seems tacky.  I already feel like the lower-class bumpkin around DH's relatives, who are a little bit snooty, so I don't want to make it any worse!

On Bravissimo, I haven't tried looking in there since I got married.  At the time they only had one style of strapless bra and it didn't go up to my size, which really isn't that large--I can find ordinary bras in Tesco, Primark, etc. so I was quite miffed that they didn't have anything at Bravissimo and seemed to think that it was freakishly huge.

I do have the strapless corset thingy that I eventually got for my wedding dress (again, I ended up getting in the US) that I wear sometimes as a last resort, but the stays really dig in to my sides so I avoid it whenever possible.

Maybe you're just supposed to wear those shrug things with your maxi dresses to cover up your bra straps?

I don't know if I am just becoming more curmudgeonly, but it seems like fashion for the larger woman and especially the trends around here in the North are becoming less and less flattering by the day.  It seems that all the women out in the nightclubs on a Friday night are wearing teeny-tiny skin-tight dresses and ludicrously high heels, no matter how old they are or what kind of body shape they have.  I'm all for fat acceptance, and loving the body that you have, but for me at least that in part means dressing it in something that doesn't make it look ugly, and keeps it warm!  On the other hand, I almost always feel frumpy, so perhaps I should embrace these tiny-dress trends.

I completely understand you.  I used to shop at Evans (and actually most of the clothes are still from there and all are 2 - 3 years old) but now everything is tacky and seems to involve horrible patterns or sequins.  I like simple things, without too much colour, and definately without huge ugly patterns. There's a couple of new places that have opened up in town that cater to over size 14s - one is for the over 50 crowd and the other appears to be for the crowd that want to wear the horrible highstreet fashion (the 80s were bad enough the first time around!!)

I'm now pregnant so will have the joy of attempting to find maternity clothes to fit. I have only found one place that sells plus sized maternity clothes, and well, they are less than flattering. I think I'm going to end up buying a sewing machine and just start making my own.  That is if i can find a pattern.

I have purchased things from SimplyBe but find their quality is not the best.  They do mat clothes though, so I may break down...

As for hair, I have fine, wavy / frizzy hair.  I have gotten my hair cut twice here in 4 years, the first time was horrible.  the second time i went to the local college and it actually was the best hair cut i'd had in ages.  Even if it isn't great, it's better spending £11 on a not great one than £40.

Somehow this also seems to me to indicate a failure to correctly use the panty liner...   :-X
