Stay-at-Home Parent Returning to Work -- HELP!
« on: May 14, 2010, 02:16:41 PM »
Since we arrived in England I've been stay-at-home dadding with my two kids (age 6 and nearly 3) which I have been enjoying tremendously. Now, though, I have a job offer from a really cool organisation and I am very tempted by the prospect of doubling our household income. doing some very rewarding work, and having a bit of sustained grown-up company for a change.

So I'm facing the task of sorting out some kind of all-day-every-day childcare for my kids, and I'm having trouble (a) emotionally, and (b) logistically. My daughter is in Year 1 in a local state primary school, which she enjoys pretty well, and my son is doing a couple of mornings a week at a nursery school just round the corner. I'm exploring all possible options (nanny, child-minder, au pair, after-school something or other) and would love to have some stories from folks who have done this -- what options did you consider, and what did you end up going with? How do you feel now that you are back at work? How are the kids doing with the new arrangement?

So, yeah, stuff like that.

I don't have anything to add here, but just wanted to say Congratulations on the job offer. That sounds great!  ;D

Hopefully someone will be able to chime in here with some advice for you.  :)

That's great news, Dent! Wish I had some advice. My son wishes he could go to after school club.

My son is 4 now and from the age of one to three and a half, he was at a wonderful nursery, but when he started proper school (nursery, half days) we went with a Childminder, and thats a fantastic situation! She picks him up from school, does other school runs, and he is in her home, and he is a part of her family. Its also cheaper, she accepts childcare vouchers, and is more flexible than nursery. Some of my friends have au pairs and nannies, but I don't really want anyone living in my (messy) home.

Good luck!
