Tell me about Cambridge!
« on: May 29, 2010, 12:51:21 AM »
My husband accepted the job and we're looking at a move for somewhere in Cambridgeshire in July. I think we'll probably rent in the Cambridge area initially, then buy in 6 months or a year once we're more familiar with the area. I know there will be quite a lot of student housing, but we're not opposed to living near students for a while if necessary. Anyone have any suggestions for our flat search - or advice (which areas to avoid!)

Thanks folks!

Whole new world for a Southern gardener, but I'm very happy.

Avoid: Arbury, Orchard Park and Chesterton.  There is some debate about that, I have a friend in Arbury and a friend in Chesterton and each one thinks the other is worse.

In general housing in Cambridge is pretty low quality for high prices, unless you are willing to pay a lot.  Mainly because of the students.

Avoid any type of heating except for gas central heating with radiators.  I'm sure I will have more ideas soon.   :)

That's good to know. Are there any websites or letting agents you actually found to be helpful on your search?

Rightmove.  The local paper used to be good, but in the past year RM has taken over everything.

Good, I'm already used to Rightmove. Unfortunately my husband may end up getting the flat before I'm moved so I'm at his mercy, but maybe we can agree on something we can both see a listing for online. Thanks!

Flats in Cambridge, unless awful or horribly overpriced, tend to go fast.  Every place we looked at went within 2 days.
