England 2015!
« on: June 03, 2010, 12:13:38 AM »
I apologize beforehand if these kinds of posts are not encouraged.

My friend and I have decided together that we are going to make a joint move to England in the not so distant future. Location is still up in the air, but we're likely going to be commuting to London. It all depends upon which school she is accepted into and where I find work.

Our ideal moving date is somewhere around late 2014 or early 2015. Between now and then we plan on saving as much as we can and finishing school. My friend's dream is to train as an actor in England and one day join the Royal Shakespeare Company. As for me, I am an aspiring cake decorator who will soon begin training as a pastry chef within the next year. I've been working as head cake decorator and essentially the assistant manager for a local grocery store bakery for the past year.

My friend and I are already doing research into getting visas and perhaps sponsors. Although we're planning on covering moving costs on our own.

While our moving date seems so far away, we have much to accomplish. We have a lot of learn and when I found this site I knew I had found a valuable resource.

Both of our parents are very supportive so we plan to use the few year we have to entirely immerse ourselves in information and try and learn all I can so that when we arrive, we are not drowning in uncertainties and suffering from fatal culture shock.

The culture shock of moving from Southern California to central Alabama was quit a jarring experience I was entirely unprepared for so perhaps I can do better this time around, eh? =D

Lol! Your post is very reminiscent of my own experience. My best friend and I made a "Lets move to England: 2007!!" pact. I moved to England in 2007, and my best friend, well, she got married. Haha. At least one of us made it!

So, I fully support your plan!

Its still going to be a shock when you get here. Although your move from Alabama to California has prepared you, it doesn't prevent you from experiencing the shock of landing in ole Blighty. I grew up in Seattle and moved to Las Vegas when I was 19, and THAT took some time to get used to. That move certainly helped prepare me for the London move, but still didn't prevent the first year from being really tough. It all ends up being worth it in the end though :)

Good luck, I hope both of you get what you want. There's great acting schools over here for your friend, I'm sorry to say I don't know much about cake decorating though :)

What part of Seattle did you grow up in? I grew up in Woodinville, but live in Snohomish now.

Lol! Snohomish!!

I grew up in Mill Creek, and my parents still live there. I've got lots of memories in Snohomish and Woodinville. The only movie theater I ever went to was in Woodinville.

How funny! Hows Snohomish? Its a lot different over her ;)

What high school did you go to?

She's the orchestrator of the idea, I'm just a leech. Her parents refused to allow her to even entertain the idea of moving without someone else coming and when I showed interest, she jumped at the idea. =D

Hello and welcome!  The visa process is constantly changing and now that we have a new government, who knows what will happen.  You might want to keep tabs on the visa and citizenship board.  We have lots of people who are all watching what is happening and sharing what they know.

Welcome to UKY!  :)

I'd suggest postgrad studies (Masters) at Thames Valley University as a good option:
