Travelling to the US
« on: June 06, 2010, 12:34:43 PM »
Hi I am the UKC fiance of an American citizen and I am flying out later this month to see him for 3 weeks. We've always covered our backs when he comes to me with letter from employer to say he has a job to return to and printed off his return flights. Should I take these precautions for entry clearance into the US on the VWP as well as I will be telling them I am on a 3 week holiday to visit my fiance?

I'm travelling with my 13 year old son and have a letter of permission from my ex husband to say I can take him out of the country on the dates as well.

I'm already thinking this is a yes, just want some clarification if possible please, the last thing I want is to be refused entry.

Thanks in advance :)

Well Congrats on this and breathe...

When my DH came over to the states to get married he didn't have anything except a return ticket.  You have a child with you as well and a letter obviosuly saying you are returning so in my opinion you will be just fine.

I am sure someone with this experience will come alone shortly ;-)

Yes, take some sort of evidence to show you intend to leave on the specified date. They may not ask for it, but best to be over-prepared than to be refused entry for something you have control over.

My UKC BF only ever had a return ticket as well, but he faced some intense questioning when he last visited the states.

Thanks, I will make sure I have as much info as possible to be on the safe side. Oddly enough travelling with my son is making me nervous, even though I have written consent from my ex husband and from the school it is out of term time that I am taking him, the tickets were a bargain and I couldn't have afforded to go during the main summer holiday time, here's hoping it doesn't give me any issues :)

Most schools are already out in the US and have been out for several weeks. So unless the person you deal with knows about the UK education system (unlikely), they won't be too concerned about if your child is supposed to be in classes at the moment.
