Cosmetic Dental work
« on: July 01, 2010, 11:00:53 PM »
Not sure if this goes here......

My husband wants to get some minor cosmetic dental work done before he enters the professional field. Basically his front teeth have started to turn into each other like a point. I had a friend in college who got this done with simple retainers (I believe they were invisalign? ). Is this something that would be cheaper in the UK or the US? If we did go about it in the UK, where do you start? Go to your local dentist first?

Where are you going to be living?  It's not as simple as just trying to get the cheapest retainer. Also, I believe invisalign are braces that go behind your teeth unlike traditional braces.  Your  husband will need follow up appointments to make sure that things are moving properly. So, even if the work is started one place he willl need further appointments to make sure things are moving correctly wherever he ultimately lives. Take it from someone who has had to have braces twice. Your husband should have the work done where he lives and his dentist should be able to refer him to an orthodontist if that is who he needs to see.

Invisalign is actually a set of custom-made aligners that are switched out every 2 weeks, until the desired result is achieved.  I agree with gretel44 that the treatment should be undertaken where it can best be monitored.

thanks. I guess i should have explained our situation, we are in the uk for another 1.5-2 years. So the choice is doing it now or waiting till we are back in the us.

(I'm not expecting NHS to cover this)

The Invisalign UK website says that estimated cost of the treatment in the UK is £3,000 to £6,000 (http://www.invisalign.co.uk/en/Pages/Home.aspx).

I believe that US treatment costs range from $3,000 to $9,000 (according to the Wiki page on Invisalign: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invisalign)
