It depends on what you are looking for and where you live.

I finally found a place in Cambridge that does eggplant parm, sort of.  It isn't fried eggplant, but still pretty good.

Where are you located in the Northeast? I have some friends in Newcastle who might know of a few good places, and here in Northumberland, there is a nice little Italian place in our village called Zecca. www.eatzecca.co.uk.

We have a new Italian restaurant opening near us soon, looking forward to trying it.
DW says she's not found a decent pizza here though. She complains about the lack of "authentic Italian" and says she's looking forward to going to the States for some....I pointed out it would be cheaper for us to go to Italy!

The family-owned Italian place on our street is FANTASTIC. Cheap, friendly, and the pizza is exactly right - just what I get cravings for. And my fiance loves it because they do their whole menu (including specials) as takeaway. His parents love it because they have white tablecloths and a pianist so they think it's posh. :P

Sorry it's in London! We've got Zizzi's, Ask, and Pizza Express all within 5min walk from us and we never ever go to any of them, because this place is so much better!

Zizzi's do a good pizza, I wouldn't touch Ask or Pizza Express with a barge pole for anything, especially pasta.  Ooze used to do a good risotto, but I think they went crazy with their prices.

If you're ever down in Brighton go to the wonderful family owned Casalingo.

Review here - http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2006/aug/15/travelfoodanddrink.foodanddrink.restaurants

"Everyone loves Italian food, but Casalingo is a reminder that we shouldn't be satiated by the lumpen pasta and pizza grub that pretends to be the whole gamut of authentic cuisine in run-of-the-mill Italian eateries all over Britain. While other Italian restaurants have popped up on Preston Street, Angelo's family restaurant has outlived them all. What makes it feel like a proper slice of Italy, perhaps, is the cast-iron commitment to ingredients which is the mark of all great Italian kitchens - it's a celebration of the natural flavours and the magic of simple cooking that makes this feel like a comfortable taverna somewhere in the hills or coast of northern Italy."

*sigh*

Used to love it so much! :)

Our fab local Italian:  http://www.cafemarinetti.com/  (5-10 minute walk down the street from us & very good!)

Also, been meaning to get to this one for ages, but haven't made it yet:  http://www.salvos.co.uk/

Salvos also has an Italian deli (Salumeria) attached - DH has been there for bits & bobs in the past.  And, they recently (autumn 2009) won Gordon Ramsay's F Word Best Local/Neighbourhood Italian Restaurant award - although I understand that ever since then, it's virtually impossible to get a table, which is kind of poopy.  Go away Gordon!  :P
