Buying or leasing a car with a US license
« on: July 03, 2010, 09:29:22 PM »
I've been reading through older posts on buying, registering and insuring a car and was wondering if anyone could help with up to date answers to the following questions:

1) Are there currently any impediments to buying or registering a car in the UK (either from a dealer or an individual) with a US license?
2) Is there a point in the process where you need to provide proof of address -- e.g. through presenting a council tax or utility bill?  (I ask because this is typically required in the US and I'll be in temporary housing when I'm thinking of buying.)
3) Any recommendations on insurance companies which will insure drivers who are still on their US license?  (The consensus in the past seems to have been Norwhich Union.  But they have since become Aviva and do not make it clear on their site that whether they will ensure someone with a non-EU license.)  Any recommendations on makes or models to avoid or other factors for keeping insurance premiums down?
4) Would leasing initially make insurance easier to obtain?  E.g. are dealers typically able to arrange for insurance?

Thanks much for your help.

I had no problems at all buying a car--it's legal.  It will be trickier though if you have to finance it as you won't have credit history in the country.  There aren't problems with your license, but with proving you can pay for it.  I bought my first car outright b/c we got a cheap little car I paid cash for.  Our second, nicer car, I had to use my husband's credit history to buy in his name (even though ironically it was my income we were living on at the time.)

I'll leave the insurance questions to others as I started with my USAA insurance and carried it over here to an overseas policy.
