Adapters for a US Dell Computer?
« on: March 14, 2010, 04:40:16 PM »
Hello!
Wondering if you may know what kind of adapters are needed for a desktop Dell computer...  Is this something anyone else has dealt with?  Or know of a certain store or help line that deals with these kind of support issues?
Thanks so much!
Natalie

I think you could just buy a USA to UK Plug Travel Adaptor?

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in!

Are we talking voltage/frequency/etc, or just a plug adapter?

I think with a desk top - you'll need to get a voltage changer, not just a plug. I brought my laptop (as alot of people have), and with a laptop you just need a plug adaptor, but I'm not sure that is same deal with a Desktop.

I would suggest calling DELL. They do sell DELL in the UK as well.

My old HP desktop had a switch on the back to change the power setting, and all it needed was a new plug.  If you post your model number, we might be able to look it up and tell you what you'll need.

My husband's Dell desktop has the same sort of switch.

Thanks for all the replies!  I guess I was worried about the voltage in this case with it being a desktop but it sounds like it might be an easy fix to find a converter?  Do any of you have a recommendation for a computer store there in London (a Staples, Office Max, Best Buy type of place)?

Such a help!  Thanks SO much!

A converter is a waste of money if your power supply has a switch on the back already built in.  I'd be surprised if yours didn't.  If you have the switch, just buy a new cord when you get to the UK at any office store or order one online.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

you can buy a new power supply at most computer retail places, find one that has a switch on the back where you can change the voltage. OR, you could wait until after you move and find a power supply in the UK. Don't forget to get new speakers, monitor, etc. everything else that you have to plug in separately.
