US Citizen seeking Advice on Dual Citizenship
« on: July 13, 2010, 09:09:19 PM »
Hello,
I was hoping someone could shed some light on dual citizenship and on Americans acquiring settlement in the UK. Here is my dilemma:

In a couple of months I will be marrying a UK citizen and I will be moving to the UK. I will be applying for settlement. My concern is my U.S. Citizenship and how applying for settlement in another country affects it. And to take things a step further what would happen if I apply for British Citizenship too. I am not a U.S. born citizen, I was born in Guatemala and automatically naturalized the day my parents became U.S. Citizens because I was minor. My concern is that I will somehow lose my citizenship.

Lastly, when I do move, do I have any duties as an American citizen, for instance paying taxes, if I am not living in the US? ???

Can anyone give advice on this matter?

Thanks so much!  :)

Becoming a resident or a citizen of the UK does not affect your US citizenship, naturalized or otherwise.  You will remain a US citizen unless you renounce it.

US citizens are responsible for filing taxes on their worldwide income no matter where they live.
