Cardiff Area?
« on: November 09, 2012, 05:16:35 PM »
My English husband and I (American) just moved here. I know there are a lot of American students in Cardiff (I see them in the grocery store looking disappointed in  the Mexican food section, ha!) but we're a bit older than that (29/30) with no children. Just wondering if there are any others around? We don't know many people here but would like to meet people!

My fiance and I are in Bristol. I think we're sort of similar; he's from Hertfordshire and I'm a 31 year old student. Being surrounded by students day in and out means I don't really have any friends my age. Even my fiance and his friends are younger than me :P How long have you been in the UK? Have either of you been sight-seeing in the area, yet?

I've been here this time since June, and in Cardiff since June, but I was in Essex visiting my husband last year for a few months. I have a few friends in Bristol but haven't been there yet. We went to Cheddar last year and we've gone to the Brecon's once and the Gower Peninsula once, but we stay around Cardiff because it's still pretty new to us! How long have you been here? Where in the states are you from?

I've been here for two and a half years. We don't have a car, so we mostly see city sights. I've done a bit of time in Cardiff Bay, and Bristol shopping, dining, and theatre (I'm a drama student). Hubby and I were saying recently how we haven't really done the touristy thing here, yet, and he's been here longer than I have. We've cycled to Bath, done many of the local summer city centre affairs, and seen the Doctor Who Experience (awesome!).

I'm from the Chicago area; I grew up on museums and beachside picnicking, but I miss the forest preserves and camping most of all. I've been camping here, but rather disliked it. I'm thinking of persuading hubby to start walking with me in preparation to see more countryside.

Sorry this is such a weird jumble. I've been trying to work out visa stuff all day and my brain is much ;) Where are you from?

I totally understand! I've given up worrying about my visa and have decided just to wait it out. Nothing more I can do.
I'm from Florida. I was a theater major also :) We haven't been camping here, I'm worried about it being too wet! But we've done a lot of walking, that's what we do most weekends. I highly recommend Cheddar if you guys get the chance. Cheddar Gorge is amazing and the Cave matured Cheddar cheese is so good.
I read your other post on the introduction. I totally get where you are coming from. I personally hate being the token American. I was traveling in New Zealand, Australia and South East Asia for almost 3 years and it was never an issue when I was backpacking so it really drives me crazy.

Yeah, I'm in this phase where certain things are really nagging me, but I'm trying to remind myself about what I love and I think it's helping :P

I'm here in South Wales too.  I used to be in Cardiff, but moved up by Caerphilly three years ago because the houses were so much cheaper and the commute was about the same once I cut out traffic from the city centre.  I love life in the Cardiff area.  It's perfect for me--lots of advantages of city life, a good cultural life, good shopping, good history, and yet small enough to personalise things and not get lost in a huge city.  Cardiff is a great place.  It has really changed a lot in the last 20 years or so as it's regenerated, so sometimes you'll hear a lot of people dissing it, but really it's a great place.

I know of a couple other Americans here and a few Canadians, but none of them are on UKY, just friends from other places.  A lot of the others on UKY that I've know here have moved on for personal reasons.  I'm not sure if there are many others.  I think there are, but I'm not remembering names well enough at the moment to know if any of them are still around. I periodically will bump into someone on the street who's moved here from the States, but I didn't keep up with any of them.  There aren't as many of us Americans here as you'll find in some other places--however, you can find plenty of places to get stashes of treats from back home, so let me know if you are looking for anything, and I can tell you if you will find it and where. :)

Oh, I'm soon to be 39, so not far from your age group.  We have two little ones.

Thanks Cadenza! I really like Cardiff a lot too. It's a good city, pretty accurate with your description. We lived in Barry for a couple months before moving into Cardiff so we got to know it a bit but I do like living in the city, and we live on the Barry side of Cardiff so traffic isn't too bad for my husband who works in Barry.
We found a group of expat Americans online and we're going to a Thanksgiving dinner with them tomorrow night so that will be good I hope!
Main thing I have trouble finding are those small tins of whole roasted green chillies. I've been roasting them myself but after peeling them my hands burn for days! My mom is sending me over some because I can't seem to get them anywhere. Even in online Mexican food shops. I've even found Chipoltles in Adobo which I thought I would definitely not be able to get anywhere! Any ideas?
If you ever want to meet up for a coffee or anything let me know! I'm waiting for my visa so I have LOADS of free time!!! :)

Meeting up would be fun.  It's just the trick of figuring out when I'm in town and available.  I'm kind of the opposite, currently working two jobs plus a family, so time is scarce lately.

I haven't ever found the chilli tins either.  I have a few that my dad sent me in a care package, but I just kind of get the chillis and cook them myself now. There are bottled jalepenos that you can drain and chop up too, but I know it isn't the same.

I think know the expat group in Cardiff.  I subscribe to their email list, but haven't really followed it or gone to any of the gatherings.  How was the dinner?
