Moving from Orlando to the UK

Hello everyone!

I just joined your forum and I wanted to introduce myself! I am Monica originally from Orlando but I plan to move to the UK soon as I will study in Warwick. I hope to gather lots of interesting new information here and that maybe I might also be of some help.

Be prepared for very different weather when you're here! My parents are in Bradenton and really notice the weather when they visit us.

You say you'll be studying in Warwick - are you going to be attending University of Warwick? If so, that's actually in Coventry (where I am) and I can refer you to some places locally for American snacks etc.

I moved to the UK from St Petersburg, Florida, last December.  The weather takes some getting used to coming from Florida.  Mainly because I didn't have the right wardrobe for the weather here.

Just wanted to say Hi! from another Floridian :-) I'm from Miami but spent the last eight years in Gainesville (Go Gators!!!) and moved here in July! I'm in Cambridge so the weather has been pretty nice and I haven't had to "get used" to much....YET!

I knew I was moving so I built up a few good coats/sweaters/boots in the past few years so hopefully I will make it through the winter with all my digits intact...

I moved here from Orlando as well in April 2008. I live in Wolverhampton, just outside of Birmingham. I agree with everyone else, the weather is the biggest adjustment for a native Floridian. The first winter wasn't too bad because the snow and cold was different and a little exciting. Last winter, though, was even more snow and cold and not so exciting. Although the snow is still nice, if you don't have a car and have to travel a lot, it isn't much fun!! The other things to get used to are the foods tasting different, especially the deserts, buying groceries and the stores closing early, especially on Sundays. Anyway, despite all of this, I absolutely love it here and, although I miss the wonderful Florida weather, it was worth the move!!

Good luck and just stay positive. Think of all of the differences as a new adventure and not don't focus on how it is different from home and things will go much more smoothly for you!!

Yet another Floridian.

I am from Winter Haven.  My wife is from Bournemouth and we are moving there in 2 weeks.  I have spent lots of time in England over the last 10 years, so I know what to expect.   The thing you miss is the SUN, not warm weather.  It's dark 20 hours a day in winter (or so it seems) and the sun is never high in the sky.  Get some indoor hobbies, or find indoor tennis courts etc.  Get a full spectrum lamp to sit under for an hour or so every day if you can.  Otherwise, just resign yourself to becoming pasty white like all the other Brits!
