2 hour radius - get away from Durham
« on: July 26, 2010, 05:14:45 PM »
For all your traveling peeps...

We want to get away this Saturday or Sunday or both...We want to drive somewhere in a 2 hours radius to Durham

I have no idea of anywhere...I want a nice B&B/hotel that has a REAL shower and big bed.
We want to go out to eat and have 1/2 bottles of red wine and spend time together.

Sure shops are cool and fun to walk thru a town but we don't want museum's just somewhere we can putz together.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I'd go to the seaside!  How about Whitby or Scarborough?

Or if you don't fancy the seaside, how about Harrogate?

I also loved Richmond (North Yorks) or anywhere in the Yorkshire Dales really!

Harrogate is a lurvely Victorian spa town, and has this:

Plus a huge park (The Stray) & just really nice green spaces (for a picnic?!), plus nice restaurants, etc too.

And the Yorkshire Dales:

We're away to Filey (N Yorks coast) for a long weekend, mid-August.  Haven't been there yet.

Whitby is one of my most favourite places ever up here though!  One we keep returning to again & again.  I know you said you didn't want museums or anything, but it has the most amazing & romantic ruins there (of the Abbey) - from Steve's photos:

I love sitting in that graveyard & looking out to sea!  So peaceful there.  :)

We stayed at this place in Whitby once and it was great fun!

Though I either felt too old or not v. gothique, but it was fun....  :P ;D

Jenn, I like Harrogate as well.  Although, if you say Harrogate to anyone northern they'll say "ooooh Posh!"  ;D

Seriously good for the inner goth, emo or New Romant in you. ;D

We had a four poster bed with red velvet covers. Loved it! And the owners go to town with it in how they dress as well!  ;D

It's a small walk to the central parade down a steep hill, if I recall.

For restaurants, we went to The Magpie and the Moon and Sixpence, but it was so long ago, I can't report on the food, as I don't remember.

I really, truly love Harrogate, but I sometimes think, 'oooh, old [the people :P]!'  :P

Thanks for all the suggestions - we did go to Harrogate and stayed at the St. George and it was a perfect night away.  The hotel was great as we got to swim in the indoor pool and hot tub....Just what I wanted!
thanks guys!
