Moving from CT to Leeds
« on: August 30, 2010, 08:28:03 AM »
I'll be moving in a week and a half from now, to get my MA degree at the University of Leeds.  Luckily I visited a couple months ago, so I already have an apartment rented, I have my visa... now it's just PACKING!  And one million and one other logistical steps, most of which have to do with the fact I'm bringing my dog with me.  I underestimated the agony and expense of that process!   :o

I'm 10 years out of college, and was pretty well rooted in CT, so it's been quite the process selling my cars, renting my house, etc, but I'm finally starting to see light at the end of the tunnel.  I've very well traveled, but I have a feeling that the change of country and the back to school thing all at once is going to be quite a shock!

Anyway... hello everyone!

Welcome! I'm also headed to Leeds Uni for an MA.  Mine is in Perfomance, Culture and Context.  What's yours?

Advertising and Design.  Is yours in the theater department?  Where are you coming from?

Yes- it is in the theatre department.  I'm coming from the San Francisco Bay Area.  Are you living in the city centre?  I'm also a bit of an older student too.  :)

I was lucky in finding an apartment pretty close to the university (on the west side), I have a dog, so it was an extra effort!  Are you in the city center?  My lease starts the 14th, and my program has two weeks of crazy orientation schedule starting on the 15th - seems like a lot of orientation!  I'm going over on the 8th though to have a few extra days to register, open a bank account, get a cell phone, and buy a car!

Now if I can just get things wrapped up on this end... can't believe I only have about a week left!

What made you choose to go to Leeds?  Do you already know people over there?

My boyfriend lives in Leeds, so it influenced my decision a wee bit.  ;) He hasn't found a flat that he likes yet, but it looks like we'll be in either Rodley or Horsforth.  Hopefully, he'll track something down before I arrive, but if not we'll be with his brother for a week or so.  Fortunately, his brother has a really big place.

I'm just getting things wrapped up here too! I work six days this week unfortunately, and I need to figure out when I'm going to get everything settled. :-\\\\

I'll be there on the 13th and I can pm you my English mobile number if you'd like to get a cup of coffee sometime.

Haha, never heard the term Loiner before!  Kinda funny sounding, but then CT residents are called nutmeggers, so it's probably an improvement for me from that!

Thanks for the welcome everyone - it will be nice to know some people in Leeds :)

Welcome to UKY!  :)

Another adopted Loiner and MA graduate of Leeds Uni who, uh, just didn't leave after graduating!  ;) :P

From what I understand, staying on after graduation is popular if you come to Leeds for study.... :P
