Flight cancellation ?
« on: August 24, 2010, 01:18:17 PM »
Hi there,

I woke up to a lovely brief email saying that my flight has been canceled.  I was scheduled to leave on the 7th of September.

The airline will only compensate me for the amount that I purchased it for.  Does this seem right? I can only travel on this day, which then forces me to book through another airline, whose prices are obviously higher..

Should I see if demanding additional compensation will get me anywhere, or stick with just getting back the price I originally paid, and deal with the financial setback on my own...

Any advice?

Thanks in advance

All they offered was a refund? Not even let us book you on another flight?
I would call them and ask what they can do because yes buying a ticket now would cost more.
How does an airline cancel a flight 2 weeks before and just say ops sorry we will give you your money back?

So sorry! I would like to know what they say to you

I would definitely call and insist on further explaination and insist on being booked on another flight or compensated for booking another flight due to their last minute cancel.

What airline is this?
I'm an American chick no matter where I roam...

Do you have travel insurance?  They might be liable to cover any extra expenses.  Because according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) it looks like they don't owe you anything beyond a refund.

Financial compensation is due unless you were informed 14 days before the flight, or you were rerouted close to your original times, or the airline can prove that the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances.
Where did you purchase the ticket?  Direct from the airline?  Or from an online site or travel agent?  If you bought from an agent or online, perhaps they can assist?

Oh no!  I feel terrible, since you chose to fly Iceland Express on my recommendation!  I did a quick search on Kayak and it looks like you could fly Continental or United one way from EWR into Heathrow on September 7th (one way) for $475 which is even less than you paid with Iceland Express (assuming that was also a one way ticket).

They did offer to put me on their flight on the 6th or the 9th, which I guess is fine, but to me it seems a bit $hitty to simply cancel a flight because there weren't enough people on it (which was the actual reasoning behind it)...but then the whole "carbon footprint" thing, yeah sure, ok, I get it.

Anyhow, as to my options-- I'm afraid the 6th would have been too early (i'm visiting family who I haven't seen in 4+ years), and the 9th would be too late (I'd arrive on the 10th, but have already booked two nights in London, at 60 quid each, nonrefundable, and had plans to apartment shop on the 9th-10th, since I'll be homeless in Nottingham when I arrive...(DB is from Leicester, so I was planning on staying there a few days while we find a nice place to live)

I believe I may have travel insurance through the credit card I purchased the flight with originally.  I will have to check on that. Thanks for the suggestion, Karrit.  And I bought the ticket directly from Iceland Express when I bought them, so no help there :(

Aimless, don't worry about it--I had originally saw the flights on one of those emails that watches the trip for me, and i probably would have purchased the cheap flights regardless of whether they came with any recommendation or not :) I did exactly the same as you too!  I checked Kayak, and saw that a RT ticket on Continental was $777 from Newark, so grabbed my credit card and started going through the process (again).  I was expecting it to be MUCH more expensive (past the $1k mark), with the trip coming up so quickly.  I had originally paid $560 RT so, currently I'm out the $200, but I would have lost another 120 pounds had I cancelled my hotel too. So, I figured I'd rather keep my losses to a minimum!

Plus I'll earn about 6-7,000 more miles now :)  I love all the fun things I've gotten with miles.  I'm trying to not be too ticked off about it, but it's just a really strange feeling to wake up to an email containing just 2 sentences, that says something along the lines of "The flight you're planning on taking to move to a foreign country is now cancelled. Call Iceland to figure the rest of it out"  LOL, they didnt even have a US 1-800 number for me to call!!  It's the first time I've ever had to "press 9 for English".

Interesting day all around.  I was also supposed to have a computer delivered today, but I called FedEx after I checked the tracking number online, and saw that there was a failed delivery attempt.  I asked why there was no note on the door.
FedEx rep:"Sometimes the driver doesn't have any."
Me: "Well the man should have come to work prepared today, don't you think?"

ugh! Today is not my day!!

That sucks, I'll definitely be cautious if I or BF fies them in the future. :-/

Continental will have better service in any case and English speaking attendants and free food and a direct flight at least!  And ff miles  Not really $200 worth but oh well. I hope it all goes well for you when you finally go!  Sounds like you've had a rough day.

Sounds like you've had a rough day.

And just the flights/computer isn't even the half of it! (but that's for another day) The failed delivery attempt for the new laptop?  Turns out they tried the house 3 doors down, and on the opposite side of the street!!!

Oh well, Mac&Cheese and funfetti icing for dinner ought to cheer me up, right?  ::)  Biiig glass of wine for dessert :D...(pending any unforeseen circumstances during my attempt to pick up my roommate at the airport)
