Moving from Orlando to Ascot, UK in December
« on: August 24, 2010, 04:36:31 AM »
I am new to this Forum. Hopefully someone can help me with information... I am going to relocate to Ascot, UK to join my boyfriend (he just moved one month ago)...  I will be visiting in October and hopefully move in December...I am a bit nervous of this move as I been told that I will not be able to work for the first six month...I have hopes to continue my studies as " Occupational Therapy." MY boyfriend has had the worse experience (computer fry when it was process through the airport, no internet service and phone service.) We communicate only through his work computer and is very limited and a phone call on sunday.   I am trying to find out what is the best calling card for him to purchase and cell phone service.  If anyone lives in this area and can help me with some information I would appreciate it. Thank You :)

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your plans to move :).

Have you figured out which visa you will need to apply for to move to the UK? You mention not being able to work for 6 months, so I'm guessing you will be applying for a fiance visa to marry in the UK? (Assuming your boyfriend is British, that is).

There's plenty of useful and helpful information here on the forum - I'd recommend checking out the visa and immigration board here, as well as the UK visa and UKBA websites to find out more about the process of applying for a visa :).

Thank you for the welcome,

Actually my boyfriend is American and he is on a tier 4 visa.  I am currently working and studying "Occupation Therapy"  in the US.  He wants me to relocated to the UK but I am not sure if we should get marry in the US OR UK, or should I go on a student Visa.

Ah, okay, well marrying in the US will be the easiest option, because you would need a visa to marry in the UK (a Marriage Visitor Visa) and then you would have to return to the US to apply for a dependent visa to join him. Once you are married, you could apply for a Tier 4 dependent student visa to join him in the UK. To get the visa you would need to show that you have at least £400 per month to live off for the length of the visa (on top of all the money he had to show for his tuition and living costs during his studies).

Alternatively, as you mentioned, you could get your own Tier 4 student visa, which means you could just move over on your own merits. However, depending on what you would be studying, it may not be easy to find a course that would enable you to move around December time... many university courses will only allow you to start in the Fall because you have to register for an entire year at a time and some classes are two semesters long so you can't start a course in the middle, and you might have to wait until Fall 2011 to move as a student.

Oh, okay. Actually that won't make too much difference to what I said before, as your options are still the same:

- marry in the US and get a Tier 2 dependent visa, this time showing that between you, you have £533 per month to support yourself on top of what he had to show for his own maintenance).

or

- get a student visa for yourself. However, for a student visa you will have to show that you have a lot of money for tuition and living costs available to you before the visa will be granted (international tuition at university is between about £10,000-£15,000 per year, plus you'd need £600 per month for living costs and if you don't have at least this amount available to you when you apply for the visa it will be refused).

It's a regulated profession, so I'd make sure you register with the Health Professions Council to practice:
