Heritage Open Days This Weekend!
« on: September 07, 2010, 08:01:07 PM »
Heritage Open Days celebrates England’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors, ranging from castles to factories, town halls to tithe barns, parish churches to Buddhist temples. It is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring to life local history and culture.

Free of charge and literally on people’s doorstep, Heritage Open Days is an event for everyone, whatever their background, age and ability...

This is taking place everywhere (in England) folks - this weekend, get in!  :)

We tried to book a tour of Leeds Town Hall (including the Clock Tower) but left it too late - fully booked - drat!  :(

But hopefully, we are going to get in on one for Temple Works.

thanks! It's already the Thames Festival in London this weekend, but with the entire family descending upon us tomorrow night, I want to give them LOTS to do to get them out of my hair!

Edit: ahh nevermind! I've just seen that London is not part of the Heritage Open Days because it's covered by the Open House London instead. But I've got better things to do on the 18-19 Sept. ;)

My husband used to work (until they moved offices earlier this year) in the Marshalls Mill, next door to Temple Works!  He was working over there (Marshalls Mill) when one of the massive stone pillars on the Temple Mill building started to blow out - they had to close the street off for awhile.  That far end of the Temple Mill is still all covered with scaffolding & sheeting, etc to secure it.  So cool that they used to graze sheep on the roof!  There's a sheep sculpture now in front of Marshalls Mill, commemorating when they grazed sheep on Temple Mill (both buildings were part of John Marshall's original flax mill complex in Holbeck).
