http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms/2010/whatson/1109.shtmlWill anyone else be watching this year?
When I first moved over here, DH had me watch this (and also Eurovision) as part of my 'cultural education'.
He meant it as a joke really, but I love to watch it! Well not all of it, usually just the last quarter or so when they start in toward the patriotic songs.
DH told me about how his dad used to have him & his little brother watch it (when they were little boys), waving little Union Jacks -- primarily for the purpose of teasing & annoying his mum, who refused to watch & went up to bed instead.
Anyway, I like it - the songs, the bobbing up & down, etc.
Although they haven't been doing the sea shanty songs that they used to do, for a few years now.
And the sad part, it just seems to signal the end of British summer to me.
Oh and I love the song
Jerusalem (and I'm not at all religious or in the WI either)!! Partly because it's William Blake's words, and partly because the song's roots were in social progressivism (women's suffrage, reaction to labour conditions during the Industrial Revolution, etc). (It's a shame that non-progressive groups also are associated with it.)
