Plums
« on: September 14, 2010, 03:10:45 PM »
My friend's plum tree had a bumper crop, so I have a ton of plums now.  I won't be able to eat them all before they start to go off- any ideas of something good to make with them?

I could do sweet, like
Fresh plum cake

Or Nigel Slater's Oat Plum Crumble

But does anyone have any savory ideas?

There's got to be a recipe for a plum chutney!

I love plums!  Picked a bunch the other day from the orchard at hubby's work--been putting them in my morning fruit salad.

My DH has one, if you're interested.  Also, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall uses halved plums to stuff baked trout, or what about roasted duck with plums?

Here is a plum chutney recipe that I have used:

500g plums divided in half and pitted.
100 ml white wine vinegar
100 g caster sugar
1 cinnamon stick
2 shallots chopped
1 tbs olive oil

half the plums and take the seed out.  chop the shallots and fry in the olive oil till soft.  Then add the plums, white wine vinegar, sugar and cinnamon stick.  bring to the boil and then let simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes till thickened.  You can can them but I just put it in the freezer in small batches and take out when we want some.
