Bringing pets back to the USA - has anyone gone though Florida?
« on: September 09, 2010, 08:22:01 AM »
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find info on what I need to bring my cat back to the USA.  We brought him over from Virginia over a year ago but now are returning back to the US.

Does anyone know where I get a health certificate for my vet here in the UK to fill in.

has anyone moved a cat recently and can share their experience?

thanks

We did it 2 years ago through Atlanta, and used a pet transport company at Heathrow. It was more expensive but they took care of all the certificates we needed. I am pretty sure, with the exception of Hawaii, it is quite easy to bring your pets back to the US, just need a fit to fly certificate and up to date rabies.

Does your cat have a current Pet Passport? If so then there's very little else you need to do.

We brought our dogs and cat back to the US a couple of years ago. You still need to have the tick/tapeworm treatment done just prior to departure (just like when you come into the UK) and something saying your pet is safe to travel. Of course the rabies vaccination needs to be current.

Check out the USDA website for their requirements:
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/animals/animal_import/animal_imports_pets.shtml

Whenever an animal comes into the US, a USDA officer will inspect the paperwork to make sure everything is in order.

It's so much simpler than the Pet Passport requirements, so if you've done that this'll be a piece of cake!  ;)

Great...so basically I just need to get a valid rabies shot, the tick and tapeworm treatment and a letter or 'fit to fly' certificate from my vet here in the UK.  That should be enough from what I have read! I'm assuming the fit to fly cert is just an offical letter from the vet stating that in his opinion the animal is fit to fly?

I'm flying Aer Lingus out of Dublin so hopefully it all goes well.  Thats who we flew him over to the UK with so I'm happy to return!

thanks all

I just found this website that might be helpful which is very up to date:

www.cdc.gov/animalimportation/cats.html

It was linked from the website that was posted previously.  You should also check the airline, because the airline might have additional requirements.

We're looking to do the same thing with our dog in a few months.
