Will US Ikea card be accepted in UK store?
« on: September 13, 2010, 12:25:13 AM »
Hi all, fairly simple straightforward question here. We were hoping to use a bit of credit to finance a few furnishings when we first arrive but wondering if US Ikea credit card will work in UK store? Anyone tried it?

TIA :)

Is it just a straight store credit card, or does it have a MasterCard/Visa logo on it?  If it's MasterCard/Visa, then it probably will.  But, if it's just a store credit card, most likely not.  You can always phone customer service to double-check.

I haven't even applied for it yet but I'm pretty sure it's just a store card with no major logo. I will probably give it a shot anyway, let you guys know how it goes.  :)

Thanks!

This would probably be something that you should ask someone in the Financing department at IKEA.

Have you considered any implications about exchange rates if they do accept the card and what plans / methods you have to pay back the card from abroad?

Here's the topic thread about establishing a credit rating in the UK, if you find it useful:

Maybe the topic thread about establishing a credit rating in the UK could be stickied? It's come up a few times recently....... ;)

This would of course constitute a remittance so may result in increasing your UK income tax bills when you come to file your UK tax returns...

Tried the "ask Anna" thing on the website but couldn't get a sensible answer. You could try the customer services number for whatever will be your nearest store when you get here

No, we had one from IKEA in the US and asked if we could use it at the one in the UK and were told no.   They are set up under the store credit card rules in the US and in the UK the rules are different.  Most Visa/MC will work (although many have charges for non-US purchases) but IKEA cards do not work.

Sorry, good luck
