When we are flush:
Well Hung Meat or Chadwicks in Balham.  Farmer's markets for produce.  Waitrose for what we need that we can't find there.  I'd like to do a veg box and am considering signing up for one, flush or not.  Costco for the things we love that we can get there.

Most of the time:
Sainsbury's.  I prefer big Morrisons for anything other than produce (it's all shrink wrapped...).  We have a Morrisons, but it's small so it's not any cheaper than Sainsbury's, and it's further away.  Costco for the things we love that we can get there (money permitting).  I can't get into Tesco.  The Co-Op...well, we go there occassionally when there's a sale, but generally it's too expensive for us to do anything but a very small shop.  Plus, I don't think the quality for a lot of things are as good as the other shops.  Back when Somerfield was separate from The Co-op, they often had good deals on meat and dairy, and the quality was always pretty good, but we've not bothered since the merger.  Asda, well, I don't like supporting Walmart, and the one time we went there we bought some organic milk and it burst all over the fridge.  Mr A didn't like the quality of the meat, and I thought the veg tasted a bit blah.

As for cheap markets: I don't think Lidl's is worth it.  We've been to Aldi's once here, and it seemed okay.  A lot different than the US one (I guess it's owned by the other brother).  We don't have one near here and the one on Old Kent Road is a bit of a PITA to access.  Iceland is weird.  None of them is totally off our list of places to go as they all have stuff that we can use.  It's just that I seem to toss a lot of the stuff from Lidl.  It either goes bad or tastes off (worst "chuna" ever was from Lidl).  However, I can get junk food and stuff like "potato waffles" for Mr A at these places, so that's what I tend to get there.

I think there is an article comparing prices in the Telegraph today.  I think they said Morrison's is the most expensive. The article doesn't give any clear answers because the prices vary from one location to another.
The comment that got me was the 'we have lowered our prices' signs in the stores. What they don't say is they have lowered them by a penny. Big Deal!!

Morrisons is definitely NOT the most expensive.  I couldn't find a link to the article you're talking about.  All I could see is Morrisons listing the most common items bought:

It depends on the location and shop size, but Morrisons is definitely not more expensive than the Co-Op or Sainsbury's.  In fact, I'd say the opposite.  Waitrose and Marks and Sparks are definitely more expensive.  Tesco is probably around the same pricing.  Asda is cheaper as it is cheaper than any chain except the budget shops, but you get what you pay for in that store IMO.

As would happen I tried to find it to no avail.  :-[

Yeah, if you're looking to save money on the bill if you move back to the UK, Jim, Asda or one of the discount chains (Lidl, Aldi, Netto, Iceland) will probably be cheapest.  It doesn't always mean they are a good value or the conscientious choice.

Waitrose is expensive, but some of their items are better value.  Like their own brand hand soap hands down is the best value at 99p (and very lush).  Their essentials line is also the best of the "value" lines of all the shops, IMO. Co-op is second, in my experience, but has good offers soemtimes.  Sainsbury's follows in pricing usually.  Their basics is hit and miss as are their regular own brand.  Their "Taste the Difference" line usually is excellent and is still usually cheaper than the premium brands.  Then Morrisons (which aren't always in the city centres, at least in the south).  Then Tesco.  I didn't list Marks and Sparks as it's not really realistic for most people to shop there exclusively.

Another thing to consider if you're moving back is delivery.  There are places that deliver meat, dairy, and produce.  Some companies do all three.  They have schemes that regularly send you a box, or you can sometimes do a one off order.  Then many of the major shops deliver, but it depends on your area.  This can be complicated or easy depending on the shop and your computer ability.

IMO, the absolute most expensive way to shop is how my MiL does it when she is low on funds.  If she has less than a tenner or only needs a couple of things, she shops at the corner shop.  Everything is so much more expensive there, but I'd often see pensioners in there obviously doing a full week shop.  The nearest full sized grocery shop was a fairish walk from there, and while there is a butcher and deli on near there, there's nothing but Greggs, off licences, Halal shops, and small corner shops in the area.  The one near where we used to live was actually half-way decent with a fairly good selection.  I've actually been in small chain shops with less selection.  But it is so expensive.  Of course, if the pensioners had computers, the know-how and bank cards/credit cards, they could order their groceries in, but obviously that wasn't an option for them.  Too bad there wasn't a service to help them with that or their shopping.

Yeah, Sainsbury's is the most expensive on that chart.  Pretty much the order I gave, but I am really surprised Tesco is that much cheaper than Morrisons.  IIRC, Morrisons isn't on mysupermarket, because they don't deliver.  Ocado (the people who usually deliver Waitrose) is.  I wonder why they weren't included.  I just saw an advert on the telly claiming Waitrose matched Tesco on over 1000 name brand products.  Of course, their meat and produce probably doesn't.

I also never buy any of the things on that list besides the occasional can of beans for Mr A and sugar maybe twice a year.  I wonder how my typical small shop order would compare.
