Prices for Rail Travel in the UK

I know you can save money by booking for train travel in advance so my question is how far in advance do you book to get the best fare?

it totally depends.  They only have a limited number so if it is a popular route it can sell out.  I think they say 12 weeks in advance but if there are any left te price goes up two weeks before the trip.

I generally try to book about 3 weeks in advance.

Are you going somewhere, Cheers?

It looks like some routes aren't discounted at all... I just did three searches for Exeter to Bristol: travelling today, travelling in November and travelling in December; a return ticket seems to be the same price no matter when you book (£22.40) and the cheapest single ticket that comes up is about £14 (which makes 2 singles more than a return).

I just checked that route for December and found singles for £4.

Which dates? I just did another search on thetrainline.com (Exeter St. Davids to Bristol Parkway) and now the cheapest I can find is £10 single, with the return still at £22.40.

Actually, I just had a thought that maybe you were searching for trains to Bristol Temple Meads instead, and doing that search, I see that there are some £4 tickets around :)... I didn't check it before because I would normally travel to Parkway.

LOL! Yes, I was checking Temple Meads. I normally travel through Parkway, too, but assumed that most people mean Temple Meads when they say Bristol.
