How are the schools in Stamford Lincolnshire?
« on: October 23, 2010, 01:53:22 AM »
Hello! We are considering a move to Stamford (my husband is British, I'm American and we have young children). My husband is from London and his horror stories have me worried about finding a safe & caring educational environment for our little ones. I wonder if anyone has been or sent their children to public (not private) schools in Stamford. My main concern is are they safe... I come from a very small New England town and I have no idea what to expect -- especially with my DH frightening me with his tales of life in London!

Thank you.

Hi, I don't know about the schools in Stamford, but the town seems very pleasant, so I'd be amazed if the schools weren't 'good'.  How you define 'good' of course is another topic!

To get the official view, have a look at www.ofsted.org.uk - this is the national agency that reviews all schools and makes its reports available on their website.  Run a search on Stamford and read some of the comments.

My wife taught in London primary schools (Haringey and Islington) and would have been happy to send or kids to school there, so there are 'good' schools in London too!

FYI - Stamford is a lovely market town.  Character.  Shopping.  Great place.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

Thanks, meggles! Actually, my DH mentioned Oundle as another nice location and I see that's your location. How would you compare it to Stamford? My primary concern is safety and an area that's family friendly. Thank you again!

IMO - Stamford is a large town.  It has proper shops - like Marks & Spensers (sort of like Sears/Macys).  Many tea houses, pubs & restaurants.  As we don't have kiddos, I don't know about the schools, but I do seem to recall a prestigious school being in Stamford.

Oundle is wonderful. I've lived there for 7 years, and I still love it.  It's a small market town, but has 3 coffee shops, post office, GP, 2 dentists, Coop (Food Store), etc.  There's a primary, middle & secondary school in town.  There's also a good private elementary & 'prep' school.  I have lots of friends with kids, and they all seem to be happy in Oundle!  There are two playgrounds, lots of baby groups, etc.  There are a decent number of Americans, from the nearby base (I think Molesworth).

If you have any other questions re: Oundle, please give me a shout!

Oundle sure does sound wonderful, Meggles! 7 years and you still love it -- that's a terrific testimony. No wonder my DH says it's a nice place. Thank you for sharing all the information.

Well, I'm off to look at Oundle real estate online. Thank you again, Meggles.

You might also like Oakham, which is nearby.  There are some nice small town places in that area.  It is not a very well known area and kind of sleepy, but that is part of its charm!  It might be a good introduction to old England coming from a small town in New England?!

Thank you for the suggestion! I'll have to ask my DH and see if he's familiar with the town. We'll add it to our places to visit when we are visiting early next year!  :)
