Did I forget something?
« on: December 13, 2010, 06:40:23 PM »
I can't shake this feeling that I've forgotten to do something properly, and I don't want my ignorance now to bite me in the bum later.  What American affairs do you have to tend to when you move to the UK?

I turned off all utilities at my old US apartment.  I paid all the final bills and closed all the accounts.

I ended my apartment lease, gave the keys back to the landlord, and got the deposit back.

I sold my car and paid off my car loan.  The account is now closed.

I set up automatic payments for all my American bills (credit cards and student loans).

I changed my mailing address for my bank account, credit card accounts, retirement account, and student loan account.

I secured an accountant do to my taxes next year who is experienced doing foreign taxes for US citizens.

Anything else along these lines I've forgotten to do?

I know there isn't one universal list that will cover everyone, and everyone will have different needs and responsibilities to take care of; however, does anyone see a glaringly obvious/important thing that's relatively universal that I haven't done?

I'm a bit afraid that several years down the line, I'll get in trouble because someone will point out that X years ago, when I moved to the UK, I didn't properly fill out and submit a JN476-989B form... or something.

 ???

It's been a long time since I moved but I remember doing a credit check on myself before I moved. I wanted to make sure I didn't have anything on there that I didn't know about, ie, identity theft. It's not a necessary thing to do. I'm just a bit neurotic!

I still plan to do this, if only because you can do it 3x/year for free, so why not. Better safe than sorry.

It's also recommended to fill out a form (sorry, can't remember which one off the top of my head) to notify the IRS of your change of address.

On the same subject, I also registered myself as living overseas with the US Embassy in London (took 5 minutes online).

You can't use the free service from overseas, or you couldn't a few years ago.  I always check when I go home for Thanksgiving.

Yeah, I think I used my VPN so that I had a US-based IP address.

Thanks everyone.  I'll definitely do the IRS 8822 form!

(I knew there was some form I was forgetting, heh)
