Best Mexican/Tex Mex in London?
« on: October 18, 2010, 07:12:35 PM »
We had a Mexican restaurant near us in Missouri that was run by Mexicans and was DELICIOUS, but apparently it might be more Tex Mex than Mexican! Hubby's favourite thing was always tacos with ground beef and mexican cheese, I loved bean dip and the burritos especial.

Where can I find food like this in London? Real fresh chips and salsa? We're going there in April next year (we live in NE Scotland) and can't wait for some better Mexican. :)

Lived in the St. Louis area for 7 years. :)

I'm plugging this site but here's a huge list of Mexican Restaurants in the London Region:

If what you're after is the type of Mexican and Tex-Mex food you had in the States, I am sorry to tell you that IME you will not find this in London.  Wahaca (there is one in Covent Garden) is very good, but not at all like what I had in my favourite Mexican restaurants in Colorado.

IMHO the best Mexican in London is at Mestizo. Wahaca is good and nicely fresh, but not really standard Mexican fare. And Green & Red used to be good, but they just had a change of ownership and their chef left (he told me to open up his own place, squeeeeee!). So Mestizo it is.

There's an awful lot of "tex-mex" in London, which is just huge amounts of stodgy, greasy meat and cheese, which I don't think is very good at all. I judge a good Mexican by 1) do they make their own tortillas? and b) how good is their molé? Not by how much cheddar cheese they throw on their burritos.

Wahaca has been my saving grace..although it's still not what you want when you're thinking of Mexican.

That said, it's still tasty!

We just make a lot of stuff on our own at home, most of the time.

The thing about the tex mex is, it's not even so bad it's good, like great queso which is a bit wrong but oh so tasty, it's just gross and nasty greasy rubbish.

I had a good meal at Lupita, their salsas were super fresh and  their guacamole was lovely. I think their menu can be hit and miss from what's said about it on Chowhound, but their take on spit roasted pork soft taco is to die for.

I really like Boho Mexica as well, here's the time out review - http://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/venue/2:23011/boho-mexica

Oh yeah! That place is spitting distance from my office but every time we try and eat there, they're closed (only open for lunch on Fridays? wtf?). So I've kinda given up on ever eating there, especially with all the competition inside Spitalfields.

A bit outside of London, but worth the trip if you crave authentic Mexican is Pachanga in Marlow. I posted about this fairly recently so won't repeat all here, suffice to say Mexican owner + Mexican chef = awesome food. Prices very reasonable too.

We went to La Perla for happy hour on Saturday, we had drinks and nachos ;D. Then a few hours later we went to Wahaca for dinner! Both places are in Covent Garden and only about a block apart. It wasn't the Mexican food I was used to eating in Arizona but it definitely hit the spot!

I second this. Mestizo really hits the spot if you are looking for real corn tortillas and authentic Mexican food, plus the margaritas are freaking awesome!

I've not found any good Tex-Mex here yet, but I live in hope!
