In about 1 year, IND will begin migrating to the new biometric passorts and ID cards. I got my ID card yesterday in the pilot project, and here's what happened:
They take your photograph, your iris prints, your facial contour, your fingerprints, and signature. Then they produce an ID card that has your name and photo and a little computer chip.
After that, you go to a separate desk that has a card-reader and they put your card in and ask you to look into the eye camera. And BAM there's all your details on the screen.
There's also a post-processing questionaire about your privacy concerns.
On balance, it was fairly well organized and the computer peripherals for fingerprints, signature, and iris prints were VERY slick!
