Northumberland Tartan Wedding!
« on: October 06, 2004, 02:59:04 PM »
Just wanted to share with you.  My husband to be, as of 16 October (omg) will be wearing the Northumberland plaid, traditional tartan for the borderlands and so will his Best Man and the Best Man's little boy!....it's black and white check in which the shepherds' wrapped around them in the cold of night.  They didn't dye the wool and just weaved together the natural coloured wools of the black and white sheep.  He's wearing the whole get up; KILT and everything!  He was born in Ashington, and we live in Newcastle, so it's very fitting for his roots.

Here is what his outfit will look like on our wedding day, if you'd like to take a peak...he's also wearing the sash in that picture....be steady, my heart!

We're also having one of the few Northumbrian Pipers left play for us at the ceremony.  He'll be playing the Cauld Pipes, or lowland pipes which are used with a small bellows underneath his right arm.  He plays for the Queen and showed us many photos of the two of them.....Betty was smiling away, lol!

I am so excited, everyone....I am GETTING MARRIED IN LESS THAN A FORTNIGHT.....sigh.....I am SOOOOO happy and madly in love.....

How wonderful, Plum!  Congratulations and I hope you have a wonderful day!

My husband, his best man and my son wore kilts for our wedding.  By rights they should have worn the Fraser tartan, but we couldn't hire that one.

We also had a pipers.  About twenty of them.  I was piped down the aisle and back out of the church.  Our wedding was in a small village in the north-east of England so after the ceremony, the pipers paraded us (and the wedding guests) down the road to the reception.  It was wonderful and funny to watch all the net curtains twitching.  ;)

Are you going to have a chimney sweep too?  No one told me about this tradition, so as we turned to go down the aisle, up pops this filthy, soot covered man with a sweep.  All I could think was, "Don't you dare come near my dress!" and "Why are you posing in my wedding photos?"

Hiya Plum ...

If you look in my first post in this topic, you'll see a link on the word chimney sweep.  Click on that; it will take you to a page where you can read about the tradition.

It's also considered good luck to have six pence in your shoe.  I had one and was told that you should pass it along after your wedding.  I'd pass it along to you, but I think I may have already passed it cos I can't find the darn thing.

In the village in which we married, the children would 'lock' the church gate (read lock as tied with a ribbon) and wouldn't open it until the groom throws coins to them.  This is also traditional as I understand it and in some places, is called a scramble.  You might want to check with hubby or the vicar/priest to see if this happens at your church.  If so, ensure hubby has plenty of spare change in his sporran.  ;)

I'd love to join you for a pint, but sadly I'm down here in the Home Counties (Hertfordshire, outside of London).  Hubby and I are hoping to move back to the Northeast.  We are looking for a slower paced life and he's from the Sunderland area.  If we make it up there, you're on for that pint!

I absolutely LOVED all your fantastic traditional lessons, and I am checking into many!  I did realise after I wrote that post that your "Chimney Sweep" line was one I could click on to learn more so thank you; I did exactly that and wrote an email to our Best Man for further info...perhaps he can arrange something for us without my groom knowing and he'll be quite surprised (and chuffed!)

Stuart told me his parents may have a sixpence, so if that's the case, I'll be placing one in my shoe!  Thank you for that!

We are not far from Sunderland at all, and if you do ever get back here, not only will I take you for that pint, I'll have you and your DH for tea one night!

Cheers!   :-*

Gosh, you can tell the wives married to northern boys.  It's not dinner, it's not supper, it's TEA!  ;)  I'm making TEA as we speak.   :D

BTW, I'll hold you to that invitation!

Caitlinn I had to LMFAO when I read again what you said about the chimney sweep, that was HILARIOUS!  ;D  I don't even know you, yet could picture your giving him the evil eye, like, WTF!!!  I wanted to hire one but was scared to find out how much this guy would be...after all, I am assuming the wedding sweeps are song and dance men and I'm positive these "entertainers" don't come cheap!

Have a great weekend!  :-*

If memory serves, the sweep was free with the promise of several pints at the reception.  He was a local and friends with my SIL and MIL.

Check around with some friends or hubby-to-be's family.  You never know, there might be sweep lurking there, just waiting for the offer a few free pints.
