New TSA rules?
« on: December 05, 2010, 03:56:31 PM »
I know there are new TSA rules from November and one of them is around your passport matching your booking/airline ticket.  I have not been able to find the actual TSA rule on this and I am trying to figure out if middle names must be included on the booking/airline ticket.

BF and I have 6 flights in the US in December/January and I am trying to find out if I need to call each airline to have our names changed to include middle names.  I would really rather not have to do this if it isn't required.

This is the email I received from US Airways:

Quote
New TSA Secure Flight restrictions
Starting November 1, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require that all reservations include your first, middle and last name, date of birth and gender exactly as it appears on the government-issued photo ID you show at the airport; otherwise, you may be delayed at check-in or your reservation may be cancelled. Please be sure to update your Dividend Miles account so when you book on usairways.com, your reservations will always include this information.

My husband and I had to call and request that they include our middle names in our bookings since we had scheduled our Thanksgiving flights prior to the rule change (I'm not sure if it's actually required if you booked before the rule changes came into place, but we wanted to avoid any hassle at check-in).

We were just called by our travel agent to include our middle names in our flights.
I believe if you have not booked your tickets already you will have to contact the airlines or travel company to update the tickets.
We booked the tickets in September, so I don't think they are grandfathering people in.

Actually, I just logged on to my Virgin Atlantic Flying Club account and it says
Quote
"For security reasons it is absolutely essential that the name on your booking, ticket and passport are exactly the same. Your booking and ticket must reflect your first and last names only. Middle names are not required.

If they are not you will be unable to board the flight. Please enter all passenger names exactly as they appear in the passports. This rule also applies to marriage or maiden names.

If a mistake has been made you can amend the name to reflect the correct spelling in the passport, up to 2 hours before the flight is due to depart. However you cannot transfer the ticket to another person.

If you originally booked your ticket through a travel agent and wish to amend the name on your ticket, please contact your travel agent directly. Or, if your ticket was booked via Reservations, please get in touch with the Contact Centre to amend the name accordingly.

There will be a charge of £30 to amend each name."

So my travel agent added our middle names even though according to VA it is unnecessary. She didn't charge us though.

I would still contact your airline to see what their policy is, as it is much better to be safe than turned away from boarding!
