Hello!
« on: January 28, 2011, 11:20:19 PM »
Hi there! I just stumbled upon the site, started reading the hilarious threads, and thought you guys knew a lot and could possibly answer my qustions. =]

I'm from Ohio, the oldest of 5 kids, almost outta high school and plan on moving to England when I get out of college. (Specifically, the Newcastle Upon Tyne area). Am I crazy? Possibly, but I hate Ohio (little strong, maybe?), don't want to stay here (Ohio, the US in general) all my life and have had a love of England and those darn English for a very long time. =]

I look forward to posting those questions and having them answed.

=D

I don't mind answering at all. =] The Newcastle area because I hear London is very expensive and congested; not that England is cheap and empty. I also hear that the Northern parts of England have a certain charm to them and friendlier people. I've Googled the area, find it breath taking, and Newcastle is an up-and-coming sort of city... they also (again, from what I've found) have great hospitals; I'm studying to become a nurse. I might just work in the city, but live outside of it... I haven't decided completely.

If any of the above information is false/based on a bias opinion I'd love to know! lol

Hello and welcome Kate123

I don't blame you for wanting to leave Ohio, its on the top of my list of places I never wish to visit again. Just an f.y.i for you The UK requires foreign trained Registered nurses to have a Bachelor's degree and 2 years working experience as an R.N before you can apply for permission to work there. Id say go to college and get your B.S.N ,work for a few years and in the meantime come to the UK on holidays and scout out your favorite places in person :)

Aww... so much hate for Ohio on this thread!  :(

Okay, it is a bit of a sh*thole, but I've found myself rather fond of it ever since moving away. But I think everyone who is just getting ready to leave high school ends up hating Ohio (or wherever they've grown up) anyway.

I don't really have any visa/job advice, but good luck with everything!

Aha!! This is the sort of thing I'm looking for.  :D

I planned on working for at least a year, before knowing this... just to get some moneys in, but I see I'll have to add another year to that. It's not a bad ideal, because I don't have money (no job, parents don't want me working until after college) so even if it pushes my pond hop a couple years back, I'm okay with it.  ;D

Thanks for the welcome's!

Welcome to UKY!

Have you ever visited Newcastle or London?  Googling is one thing, but you really should visit and experience everything yourself - you may find that your opinions change!  I never thought of myself as someone who would ever enjoy living and working in a big city; however, I'm in London now, and am absolutely loving it.

EDIT:

I should also point out that you should probably think about how you're going to move there.  You need a visa to be able to move and live and work in the UK, and you don't just apply for one and get it - you need to qualify for one first, and it can be difficult to even be eligible to apply for a visa in the first place.

Best of luck to you, it can be tricky, but it's not impossible.

here is the link for info in requards to Nursing in the UK
http://www.nmc-uk.org/Registration/Joining-the-register/Trained-outside-the-EU--EEA/
Another good site I swear by is allnurses.com really great for info and support while your attending school.

Maybe you can make a deal with your parents that if you attend college and get good grades every semester maybe they pay for a trip to the UK once a year so you can see if you really like it ? just a suggestion

Best Wishes and study Hard
