help from the British embassy?
« on: December 17, 2010, 04:24:54 PM »
I was just reminded in another thread that the US Embassy can help American citizens who cannot afford to return to the US (but have to) with a flight costs.

Does anyone know if the British Embassy does something similar? As in, a UK citizen has to return to the UK as the US visa is expiring but is too broke to do so?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Not sure if the British Embassy offers the same services, but then again the US Embassy doesn't really advertise that they will either. Probably the best situation would be to contact them and inquire: http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/about-us/our-embassy/contactus/locations/.

The only information I could find just states that if a UK Citizen is 'in hardship abroad' that they should contact their nearest British Consulate for help and advice. This was from the following leaflet: http://www.fco.gov.uk/resources/en/pdf/2855621/english-summary .

Thanks, it's not for me (obviously). But it may become an issue for someone else.

No problem...I'm trolling through BritishExpats to see if anyone has reported using something similar to return to the UK and will report back here if I find anything.
