Hat and birdcage/blusher veil
« on: January 04, 2011, 12:44:46 PM »
I'm looking for a 1940s/50s style hat and veil - any suggestions where I should start looking? Mostly the hat angle - veils are fairly easy to attach, right? Bonus points for not having rhinestones.

I love this one from Etsy but it's a little out of my price range (and I'd want white, not ivory but I'm sure she could make one for me)

There's a hat shop in Edinburgh that can probably put me in touch with their milliner but I don't know when I can get down to Edinburgh. Has anyone found a good website for mid-20th century stye hats?

This whole "champagne taste on a beer budget" thing kinda sucks  :P

Ahh you might have better luck searching for "fascinator".

And if you're handy with a glue gun, I wrote up a tutorial on how to make a fascinator almost exactly like this a few years ago... :) They really are super easy to make, and John Lewis has loads of fancy bits for decorating the base, too.

How do you feel about making your own? You can get the base for next to nothing on eBay, and then decorate it the way you'd like with stuff from a millinery supplier (there are loads of them online).

I'd certainly be willing to give it a go! SP I have your site bookmarked in my wedding folder ;D and thank you Chary, I hadn't thought to look for the bases on Ebay. I was looking randomly on the web and going around in circles. I have mad skills in the ribbon flower making department and while I gave away all my ribbons, I still have my pliers!

 :-* to both of you!

My dressmaker makes hats/fascinators as well. I'll look through her slideshow of what she's done and if we can agree on a style and price peachy, and if not I'll ask her to order some extra fabric for me to play around with.
