Son of a Yorkshire girl and UKM hopeful.
« on: January 07, 2011, 06:46:03 PM »
Hello all, I discovered these forum while researching the UKM. I spent a fair amount of time with family in the UK about 12 years ago but at that time I did not have right to abode because although my mom is British I was born in the US to an American dad. Well recently because of changes in the law my 4 sisters and I have been more seriously looking into dual citizenship.

One of my main motivations for possible migration is that I'm a nurse and a coworker of mine recently went to the UK on a special work visa. She really likes working in the NHS and wants me to come over as there is still high demand for native English speaking nurses. If I was able to obtain a UK passport I would be able to avoid large fees and bureaucracy.

Anyhow, if anyone out there has experience with the UKM process I would like to hear how it went, I have seen other threads related to this topic and will continue looking. Do people think that the current government in the UK will try to make it more difficult to obtain dual citizenship through this process? Thanks for reading.

Hello and welcome.  I do not have experience with UKM, but I believe we have a few people who have applied for citizenship through descent.  Hopefully one of them will pop on at some point (but it is Friday night so you may not get immediate responses).

I think if you are interested in dual citizenship, then it's probably best to go for it.  I don't know what the government has in mind for citizenship through a parent, and it's hard to predict whether or not the laws will change again in the future.  The best part about dual citizenship though is you can move here and if you don't like it you can always move back.

Good luck with your decisions!   :)

If anything they've made it easier as the fee for UKM registration to children born to British Mothers before 1983 has been abolished. The only fee you have to pay is the £80 naturalisation ceremony fee.

The application is simple, the document requirements are very simple as well...quite basic compared to a UK visa.

Good Luck!

I documented my process with the UKM form/dual-citizenship in 2009 when I applied. It was very straight-forward - got my documents (all 4 of them - 2 birth certs & 2 passports), got my referrers to sign off on my being a good person, sent off the form (and a crapton of money - which is no longer applicable!), waited 2 months, and I was a British citizen. :)

Thank you all for the encouragement and suggestions. I will keep you all updated on how things go. By the way, is there a specific thread to the UKM process? I don't want to fill up the forums with redundant post. Thank you again.

I don't think so. I didn't find much when I was investigating the process. My thread is here, which you're welcome to take over.

Did you send your application to Liverpool or to the embassy in DC?

Applying in the US you have to send it to the US. I'm not sure if it had to go to DC specifically (I think so?) or if it was meant to go to the nearest consulate to you (which in my case was DC anyway).

It gets sent off to Liverpool from there - I got a letter saying my application had been received, including a receipt for the payment, and that my documents were being sent off to the UK.

I just sent off my UKM application to the DC embassy on Jan 4, and got a reply from them on Jan 13 that it had been forwarded to Liverpool.  Exciting!

A minor issue I had was that my dear old Mum had gotten rid of all her old British passports! But it turned out not to be a problem, because I informed them of this in a note, and included the birth certificate of her father. The embassy was satisfied with that.

Although they have recently waived the main application fee, there is still the consular fee of $140 ($128 to "format" your application for Liverpool, and $12 to mail back your original documents), and if successful, the ceremony fee of 80 pounds. But at least they got rid of the main 500 quid processing fee!

Good luck, and I'm looking forward to supporting the "Poms" the next time they play Australia for the Ashes!  ;D

Hi and welcome to UKY!   :)

Good luck with the UKM application!  If you have any qs you can always make a new post in the Visa section.  Someone'll invariably pop up to give some good advice.

Thanks, Teletabby, I will do that.  Searching with "UKM" you find a few existing topics that have already answered some of my questions.

I'll keep y'all informed as to my progress.
