Phone numbers & online shopping
« on: January 19, 2011, 09:10:22 AM »
I feel very silly asking this, but what is the correct format for a UK phone number?

I've been trying to make a customer account on a website so that I can order a few things, and when I try to fill in the required phone number (my husband's mobile number), it just won't take it.

I've tried every variation I could think of, for example:

01234567890
1234567890
01234 567 890 (this was how my husband had told me UK phone numbers are usually written, and what I've noticed commonly myself)
1234 567890
12 3456 7890 (this is how another guy's website suggested was the actual, proper way.  He was very adamant, and claimed BT had been getting it wrong for years. :p)

Nothing works!  I've variously received error messages saying it's not a valid mobile number, that it must be a valid number 10-11 digits long, and that I must enter a valid dialing code.

I just want to be able to make a wish list!  What am I doing wrong?  Anyone have any ideas?  And yes, I'm sure that I'm putting in his actual, correct number.

Hmmm, have you tried 0123 456 7890?  Up here, I generally see that format or the one your husband suggested.

Though, do you think it might have something to do with where you're moving?  Some places don't ship to the islands.  Maybe they won't let you register if it's a number they won't ship to?

Or, could just be that their website is rubbish.  ???

I thought about adding the 44, but that would have made it more than 11 digits, so I figured that wasn't what they wanted.

I never did get the mobile number to work.  Tried everything!  I finally dug out the landline number, and it accepted that, after a few tries.

Thanks!

Like I said, I tried that.  I tried everything.  It just wouldn't go.  It seemed to have some sort of checking system it was comparing to or something, so I'm wondering if his dialing code just isn't registering as a mobile number.

I got it to work now, and I'm fairly certain the issue was with the site and/or that particular mobile number, not me.

I get that sometimes- as I primarily use my mobile number as my contact number and sometimes for whatever reasons, websites just won't take it.

It's obviously a conspiracy against deepest, darkest Scotland. ;p

(As if it weren't hassle enough that about the only option for buying clothes is online!)

Good luck getting clothes companies to want to ship to you all together! Because you're not on the mainland, you're gonna have loads of difficulties.  :-\\\\

I am on the mainland and I encounter errors very often "We only ship to the mainland UK" - errr, yes, I am!

Yes, I've already experienced finding a couple sites that look really promising, only to find out they don't ship here.  It's annoying, and short-sighted of the company, since they've got a captive market out here.

Fortunately, there are at least a couple of companies in Glasgow & Inverness that will accept deliveries & then forward them.  Or I could just make nice with my SIL and time my orders for when they're planning on visits home, or when we'll be on the mainland. :)

All UK mobile numbers are in the format 07abc123456, 11 digits, the abc identifies the provider, my Virgin Mobile number starts 07504 for example. Some online shopping sites won't accept a mobile number, I have found. By the way, it is a common misconception that London still has more than one area code (i.e. "0207" and "0208"). London has one area code, 020, and following that is an 8 digit number which will not necessarily start with 7 or 8.

This site had separate input boxes for mobile or home/daytime numbers, so they obviously intend to accept them.  And my husband's mobile number does begin with 07.  And we're so, so, SO far from London. :)

It was just broken.

The only other thing I can think of is: were you putting the right type of number in the right box? (i.e. the 07 number in the mobile box and/or landline number in the home number box)

I know that the online booking system on the tills at my old work would only accept a landline number in the top box and a mobile number in the bottom box... if I tried to put an 07 number in the top box, it wouldn't accept it  ::).

This is one of those times when I wish sarcasm was easier to convey in print.

Yes, I was putting the mobile number in the box labeled mobile.  Over and over and over, in every conceivable format.  It just didn't work.  I'll admit that this caused me a few moments of self-doubt, hence my original post.

But when I finally gave up on the mobile number and looked up the land-line number, and it worked quite easily (in the box labeled 'Home Phone,' not the Mobile box, of course), my faith in my own intelligence was restored, and I realized that the problem wasn't me, it was the site.

What is it with some web designers? I have had to invent US zip codes to get registered on certain sites even though I previously selected "United Kingdom" in a drop down country list.
