Honouring a US prescription in the UK?
« on: January 21, 2011, 11:01:40 PM »
Has anyone had trouble with their GP hounoring a prescription written in the US? Basically  if you are given a script by your doctor in the states and move over to the UK will your GP write you one to continue you on the same medicine?

I did not have any problems... just make sure that the same medicine exists in the UK.  Sometimes they do under different names, but also be aware that even the same drug manufactured in different areas can effect people differently.

My GP was so wonderful they even saw my dad and prescribed meds for him that he had left in their rush trip to the UK for the birth of my son.

I'd make sure you had enough medication to see you for a while prior to your move though.  I did the same when I moved back to the USA too.

If it's a specialised drug that's taken some trial & error for you to find the one right for you (like birth control, some psych related meds & such) you may need to get your US medical records and perhaps a letter from your US Dr, showing the need for that particular medication.
