Hi! My husband has been reading this forum for a while and suggested I post this question here.
I'm looking to sell a few Fine Art type photographs/prints in the next year so I guess I'd be classed as self employed. I'm having problems sorting the grain from the chaff on the the IRS website so I don't know what I'd have to fill in. The UK form for self employment looks easy enough (found thanks to links on posts here!). I'm probably looking to make over the minimum amount to file if self employed (that's around $400/year yes?) so I'm not sure how that affects the tax exemptions etc or what forms to fill in. I'm estimating I'm probably going to make hopefully in the range of £300-£500 in sales between around now/soon (not started or set it up yet until I get everything sorted so I know what I'm getting into) and next tax year.
Background: I'm a US Citizen in my 20s and have never filled out taxes before (university and deciding to be a housewife means I've not had a "real" job). I have a SS# but not an NI# but that doesn't look to be a problem as I'll probably get assigned one when I register as self employed in the UK. I have indefinite leave to remain in the UK so have full recourse to work so no problems there. I'm married but my husband is British so that'd be Married Filing Separately? I'm not looking to return to the US and I've lived in the UK for the last 6.5 years. Not looking to set up a company or VAT exemption since I'd be making so little.
I'd probably be using Etsy or similar to sell most of my prints/photos so I'd have receipts via that but what would I do for in real life sales receipts?
Thanks for any help you can provide on this
The UK stuff seems so much easier to read to me, the US stuff makes my head spin
