Studying History Education Student
« on: March 10, 2011, 01:18:25 AM »
Hello UKY,

I'm currently studying to be a History teacher at Pittsburg State University in Kansas.  I'm looking to teach in the UK when I graduate by using an agency like Bluewave International or some other source.  I would like to gain citizenship eventually and perhaps work on Post-Graduate work as well.  I'm twenty-one and I'm looking to return to the country of my great-great grandfather.

Cheers

What level of history teaching are you looking at?  Also, are histoy teachers on the shortage list?

This whole area of work visas is changing rapidly.  There is no guarantee that a work permit will continue to lead to citizenship.

Just keep working on what you want for the future, whether it is in the UK or not, and you should be fine.

No, history teachers are not all the shortage list.  Only pure sciences and Maths are on the list.  I'm looking to teach Secondary, and I'm looking to diversify my Curriculum Vitae to make myself more desirable.

On the citizenship note it seems to be the only good way to attain citizenship.

Hi.  Welcome to the forum.  I'm from Kansas originally - born & grew up in the Hutchinson area.  Lived in Lawrence (Jayhawks!) & Greater Kansas City area for 15 years after I graduated high school.  Then left Kansas for Tampa, Florida.  After which I moved here, 7 years ago.

Good luck to you!  :)

It's probably best to post on the Visas board about stuff like this, but honestly, it's very unlikely that you will be able to follow the path you propose.  Tier 1 visas are dead and the government is putting more and more restrictions on Tier 2, making it harder and more expensive to sponsor, and strictly limiting the numbers.  It is very possible that they will close the path to citizenship for economic migrants.  I've looked on the Bluewave website, and all the testimonials are from 2009 or before, and their visas section still talks about Tier 1 even though that path closed last year!  What I'm trying to say is just don't pin all your hopes on this, be prepared to be flexible, and take bookgrl's excellent advice: do something that makes you happy and fulfilled, whatever country you're in, and the rest will work itself out.

Oh, and welcome to UKY!

Hello and welcome!  I studied for my MA in History here, and met my husband.  I don't know if History teachers are on the shortage list here (but I think someone already said they are not) but I do know that when studying for a PGCE here, history gets one of the lowest stipends which makes me think there is no shortage of them.

Maybe you can study for something like an MA, or a PhD here if you want to teach at the Higher Education level.  MA's last a year so shorter than the History ones in the US at leat that I looked at a few years ago, plus you will get a good idea of what it is like to live in the UK!

Either way, good luck with it all!!   :)
