PREGNANT AND NO GP!
« on: March 15, 2011, 01:58:14 PM »
Need a few answers and advice if anyone can help. I am in Scotland (heavily pregnant) with a Fiancee Visa and I'm finding it difficult to register with a GP as they keep turning me away any advice on how to register or challenge them with information in hand? I'm now panicking as the birth date is creeping up and very anxious!  :-[
Also how can me and my fiance (Scottish from birth) apply for Child Benefit and other benefits (tax credit etc), do I need anything ie NI number?
Look forward to all your advice, thank you.  :)

You will be given Child benefit, etc. forms in the hospital after the birth. Be careful though, on the fiance visa you are not allowed public funds so make sure you do everything in your fiance's name.

Can you call the surgery and ask them to refer you to a midwife because you are heavily pregnant and due on (X) date?  You don't see the GP for pregnancy anyway so they might be able to bypass that part depending on the reason they are refusing you.

summer...
Since you are here legally on a fiancé visa maybe they are being sticklers because it expires in 6 months time - when did you get here? When does it expire?

You can always call the NHS direct http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/

Just make sure you know the law and you tell them you know the law ;-)

good luck!

I just got back for US 2 weeks ago so there is still a long time for expiry. I have looked into things a bit and I am reading that I'm allow medical care on this visa so I might just ask for someone in charge instead of dealing with receptionist. Thanks for the feedback I appreciate it

Yes, you are allowed to use the NHS on the fiance visa - you were eligible to register with a GP on the day you landed in the UK. Unfortunately, though, a lot of receptionists at GP surgeries are misinformed about who can register and turn people away who are in fact eligible for the NHS (I believe that EU citizens have to be resident in the UK for 6 months before they can register, but this doesn't apply to fiance visa holders, yet many GP surgeries seem to try to apply this rule to everyone else too).

This NHS webpage specifically states that people coming to the UK to marry a UK citizen and live here (i.e. fiance visa holders) are eligible for free NHS treatment: http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Healthcare/Entitlementsandcharges/OverseasVisitors/Browsable/DH_074377. It might be an idea to print off that page and show it to the GP receptionist, along with your visa, to prove that you are allowed to register.

Is your fiance able to call and register for you?  Perhaps that would avoid the whole "you're a foreigner in our land" issue and people who don't know how to handle the situation.  They wouldn't even necessarily know you were American until you showed up for the appointment (or in-processing).

Come to think of it, that's how I got registered.
