Any Suggestions ?

I'm hoping someone can give me some advice on what to do I have a little problem.

Ive been offered a job with the UK branch of a company I worked for in the US,  my issue is that it is not accessible by public transport and I will have to drive to get there.

It is my understanding that I can drive on my American Licence for 1 year from date of entry to the UK and Ive been here 2 months.

My problem is if I buy a used car it seems that no one will insure me to drive the car with an international license.

Can anyone recommend an insurance company that they were successfull with having an American license.

 Also , I had thought about renting a car for practice on the roads here but my Husband says you have to have a credit card to secure it and they wont accept my visa debit bank card as such.....is this true ?

I had to do some calling around but I'm still on my American license and insured with Directline. 

I also had no trouble using my visa debit card to rent cars with before I purchased a used car...
