Children's Beds
« on: April 10, 2011, 11:40:50 AM »
I am looking for a bed for my 4 year old and am wondering what you've found good.  I am looking at the Silent Night ones as they look very comfortable and more like ones from the States.  But they are a bit pricey and I am not sure if a bed that is less firm is good for children's backs.

Thanks

All up to you really, IMO a 4 year old is ready for a "adult" size bed.  So long as they are potty trained well and don't have too many accidents I would invest in the bed & mattress they are going to have for the rest of their childhood.  My daughter is 5 and we bought her a twin Sealy mattress & box spring that was firm at the extra price but that is in large part because we think it is more supportive.   We went to special mattress store in Sheffield but they did have to order it.

Many of her friends sleep on very soft beds and their mom's have said to me that they think that firm mattresses damage kids backs as they do not contour to the child's shape.   But I think British style mattress are too soft and so my decision is probably shaped more by my opinion and personal experience than any science.

I have noticed that most (90%) of her friends still sleep in toddler/ kid sized beds.  It might be that space is more of a premium or just that kids are not moved to "adult" beds as soon.   To me a firm mattress is better and worth the investment.

Jean has been in a normal twin bed since she refused to settle in her cot at 19 months. She has a sealy mattress, sort of medium-firmness.

We are avid John Lewis shoppers! We bought a trundle bed there ages ago, so far so good...
