I second the York bus tour...DH and I did it and he was amazed at all the stuff he found out.
We did jump off and on after we did the whole tour.  Oldest Pub - Black Swan ect...
I also recommend the Hole in the Wall Pub for the Roast Beef Dinner - NOT beef sunday lunch since the RBD comes in a large Yorkshire pudding to die for!

Black Swan is one of my favourite pubs!!  Great atmosphere and the food is actually really good, but it's not quite in city centre so I don't usually recommend it as I don't want people getting lost.  York is full of crazy, bendy roads.  Glad you found it the CW and liked it!  It's fab!

Hole in the Wall is pretty good too.  My favourite for food is the Mason's Arms which again is a little outside city centre, but the portions are huge for what you pay and the food is imo is the best pub food in York.

Oh yeah & don't forget (persephone), everyone (including you) always raves about York Hog Roast:

But I'm not clear on if that's takeaway only, or if they actually have a sitdown restaurant bit of it?

Hogroast is takeaway only which is why I don't recommend it often for people coming to visit.  It's great, but when I'm going for some time away, I like a sit down after my exploring.   ;)  I guess I assume everyone else does too, but if you want lunch on the go, it's pretty good (I eat it almost every week).  I think their second store on Stonegate is a bit better than the one on Goodramgate at the moment.

Yeah, I like a sit-down myself too - lol!  Which is probably why I've not tried it yet.  But it always gets rave reviews, and with the weather getting warmer & more pleasant (fingers crossed), a person could get that & sit outside in a pretty spot.  :)

Finding the nice place outside, there's the challenege!  The gardens behind the Minster are popular and Museum gardens, but they can get VERY busy over the lunch hours.  We are fast approaching tourist season in York.   ;D

I just found this:

It may not be very helpful for tourists, but it is amusing.

If the weather is OK, you might consider a boat tour up the Ouse.

All of those places sound great too! Except, I'm a vegetarian (!) but my parents like to consider themselves "meatatarian's" so I'm sure they'd love it! By the sounds of it, we're going to have a lot of eating and drinking to do!  ;)
Follow your bliss.

There are vegetarian restaurants in York, for example, Goji on Goodramgate. Or you could have Indian and have a veggie meal while they get something with meat.

I used to volunteer with someone who LOVED Goji!  Also, some pubs do better veggie meals than others, so check around.  Plus, York has plenty of chain restaurants if you are struggling to find a cafe or a local place to eat.  The other thing is tea shops or coffee shops.  I had a friend who was doing her MA here and she was vegetarian.  She thought some of the tea or coffee shops had some good alternatives.
