Requesting a two-month extension for filing US taxes
« on: April 08, 2011, 11:39:51 AM »
I am fairly sure that US citizens filing from overseas get an automatic two-month extension on their tax deadline -- can someone let me know what the form is called with which I make this request?

Also, my wife (USC) and I (US/UK Dual) have been in the UK for the entirety of the tax year, working and earning money here. Our only income in the US was from a rental property, and we did not transfer any of that money over to the UK. Do I just fill out a regular 1040 and claim just the rental income? Do I have to do the FBAR thing?

It's automatic - you don't have to request it.

You need to do a 1040 and a form 2555.  Take your UK earnings for 2010 and convert to $.  Enter this on the 2555.  This is your foreign earned income.  If you get UK child benefit or child tax credit convert this to $ as well.  Add the two together for the "other income" on the 1040.  Not sure where the rental income goes.

You only need to do FBAR if ithe aggregate value of your UK accounts exceeds $10,000 at any time during the calendar year.
