Funny. My sister was just telling me that in my mother's apartment in Brooklyn, you can hear the neighbour's conversations through the vents. The nurse that used to take care of her thought the apartment was haunted.

In my dorm you could hear people through the sockets.  They were the same on both sides of the wall, so it was basically an open hole.   :)

When I was very small we lived in a duplex (semi) and the little girl next door and I used to talk to each other through the bathroom wall  ;)

I hate neighbor noise. HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT!!!!!!!!!

I live in an apartment in California right now and I hear doors slamming, TVs on, techno music all the time. I am so tired of hearing what everyone else is doing. Thanks for the reminder that I need to look for a soundproofed, or detached home when I arrive. ;)

There are times it drives me mad (like when the high pitched sounding mom screams at her kids who are always out of control), but it's not that bad.

I'm sort of in Louis CK's camp on this....before I had a child I was like, "Look at that horrid woman screaming at that poor child", now I'm thinking "What did that little sh*t do to his poor mum now?".

That being said, there is a little girls somewhere in our warren of back gardens who screams as if she has just slammed her hand in a door. I know now that she isn't mortally injured but the pitch and intensity must jar some sort of evolutionary response mechanism because it makes me want to charge out and see if she is ok everytime for an instance. Like if I had monitors hooked up to me the little lines would spike for a few seconds.

I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

We live in a mid-terrace that is much, much quieter than any residence with shared walls we've lived in while in the States---and that includes new construction apartments in Texas, 100 year old brick walkup flats in Chicago, and a 1970's townhouse in Chicago. Maybe we've lucked out with quiet neighbors in the U.k. but those walls are fairly soundproof.

Seriously? Where do you live in Norwich and can I move there? We live in a mid-terrace Victorian and we hear EVERYTHING.  Coughs, what people say.....and I have 'quiet' neighbours. Neighbours on one side are moving out and I'm dreading the noise they'll produce!

Depends on my neighbours. I live in a mid-terrace built around 1905. One saide I don't hear from but thats's the wall with both our fireplaces on so additional distance. The other side though, some neighbours I've heard nothing from. The latest, a couple of girls in their mid-20's....sometimes on a Friday evening I can hear their chattering above our TV! One Friday they probably didn't stop til 5 in the morning!

The girls have since moved out!  ;D Sometime over the last couple of weeks....saw the owner there yesterday cleaning up so fingers crossed the next tenants are quieter! The other side who are great neighbours have the house for sale so I'm hoping they don't sell!

We're in your part of town, but closer to the city centre. It's a quiet enough street.
You probably wouldn't want to be my neighbor, however. While my neighbors are lovely and quiet (a married couple who travel a lot on one side and an elderly woman on the other), we have the noisy house in this cluster. My ever-screaming 3 year old boy makes things interesting.

Or maybe I lived in some REALLY loud places in the past and this seems mild by comparison. :)

At present moment, I can hear my neighbor being sick in their bathroom.  :-X This is most certainly a direct result of them coming home wasted at 3AM when they were stumbling up their stairs, which we could hear loud and clear.  They have a new-ish baby, and I think this is the first time since they had her that they got the chance to have a night out.  I am torn between "Eww eww eww, WTF!" and "Good for them!".  :P

Still can't wait to move to a detached in 6 weeks and not have to hear anything ever.  :)
