Wanting to ship over Berry Happy Home
« on: April 30, 2011, 01:30:26 PM »
Hello all,

My mother in the US has offered to get a quote on what it would cost to ship over my old Strawberry Shortcake Berry Happy Home to our house in England. I have a 5-year-old daughter would would absolutely love to play with the house, and I always envisioned passing it down to my child.

The box measurements and weight indicate UPS wants about $1000 to ship it over, and that isn't doable.

I was thinking about contacting an international moving company in my mother's city and asking them what they would charge to carry my box over along with someone else's household goods. I'm just trying to think of other options.

If anyone here can offer some ideas where I can obtain the house more cheaply, I'd be extremely grateful. I don't expect the shipping to be cheap, but more manageable than 1 grand!

Those things are massive!  :o But $1,000?! Eek!

I haven't seen one in years, but is there any way to break it down and flat pack it and bring it as over as oversized luggage?

Yeah, I think that may be the only way to go. We've been hesitant about taking it apart because the house was stored in a shed outside for a long time, and we're afraid the plastic may have become brittle.

I found a better quote through a European company, but it was still over $500. Still, it's something to consider. :)

Hi

What are the box dimensions and weight of the securely packaged item please?
which city is it in, and also, how much is it worth? for insurance purposes.

PM if you wish, and I'll speak to some contacts to see what kind of pricing comes back

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

The technique is not to approach the main carriers like DHL or UPS direct, because you will simply be given a retail price for the service. Go through one of the many third party carriers out there who have trade contracts with the big carriers.

The service is exactly the same as if you had dealt with the carrier direct, it is collected by them, you can track it through their tracking system until delivery. I recently sent a parcel to the Czech Republic that I had been quoted £40 by DHL, I booked through Worldwide Parcel Services who use DHL, and I had the parcel delivered for a shade under £20.

Here is a link to Money Saving Expert.com which explains the system, the ones I have used have a website that defaults to a parcel going from the UK, so you may have to make a phone call to find out how to do it from the USA. Worldwide Parcel Services have always been helpfull if you need to ring them for help.

Jack,

Thank you so much for the information! I'll check it out this evening.

I moved to the UK in my early 20's with 2 suitcases. It was all pre-child and most of my possessions have been acquired over here.

That dollhouse is the one item I'd like in England. :)
