Meningitis C vaccination?
« on: April 07, 2003, 05:11:26 PM »
I received a letter in the post from our surgery re: Cole's immunizations.  They reviewed his immunization records from the States and said that he is up to date except for the Meningitis C vaccination.  He's 5, and was up to date for everything in the States.  Has anyone's child(ren) had this vaccination?  Anything unusual about it?  He's had no reactions to any vaccinations so far.

Thanks,
Stephanie

Both of our kids had this done in school just as it was becoming manditory here. The UK is the first nation to try routine meningitis vaccination and it seems to be working.

In the U.S. as you may know it is only used during outbreaks. Our children had no adverse effects. No temps, no headaches, nothing like that.

As children are at the most risk it may ease your concerns to know that the aggresive immunization campaign they've forged has reduced the number of new meningitis cases in the U.K. by up to 90%. Apparently doctors in the US are eager to get their hands on the UK vaccine as it differs from the US version, and is supposed to be far more effective.

According to WebMD: the type of vaccine used in the U.K., which includes a bacterial protein that helps the body to recognize and destroy the bacteria, should be available in the U.S. within the next two to four years, and it will then be available for consideration as part of the routine childhood vaccination schedule.

So, you've got a jump on everyone back home. In the UK they've been using it for years, so I'm sure it's perfectly safe. Speak with your GP if you have any lingering concerns. When it comes to your own piece of mind - don't worry about being a pushy American Mom  ;D

Sound like it's pretty routine, then.  I'll go ahead and schedule an appointment.  Thanks for the info! :)
