How do we get our NHS numbers?

My children and I have all registered with our local GP. I have one son that needs a referral to a paediatrician and then on to a specialist at GOSH, but we can't get the referral until he has an NHS number. How do we get the number?


eta...We got it figured out. Hand A just wasn't talking with hand B.

I think mine was sent to me maybe a month or a bit more after I registered with a GP surgery.

Our surgery submitted our paperwork to NHS to get us registered and issued numbers. It only took about 2-3 weeks to receive our numbers (no more cards here, however!)
