Going Home-sort of
« on: April 25, 2011, 03:41:19 AM »
Howdy everyone from Atlanta  :) My name is Liz, I very rarely use Elizabeth and I think the only person to call me Elizabeth Jane is my mum but even then it's rare. I live in Atlanta, been here for about a year.

I was born in the UK, in a tiny tiny village west of London actually fairly close to where Kate Middleton is from, just a fun fact. My dad got a job in Chicago though so we relocated to the US when I was six. So I pretty much grew up as an American but I was a UK citizen.

I was married until about three years ago. My husband and I were high school sweet hearts and we had a really nice life. In college we flipped our first house and made a tidy profit so we basically kept doing that and it was definitely profitable. We bounced around the US and were living the high life, then I decided I wanted to settle down. At first he was alright with it, and we had a son then a daughter, but during my third pregnancy with our daughter he decided he wanted a divorce. It's alright though, I have two beautiful daughters, Charlotte and Hannah, and my son James who are plenty enough company.

So recently I took the kids on holiday to England mostly to visit my mum and dad who live there now but I took the kids all over the place and they just had such a good time. At one point my son said, "Mommy, can we just stay here?" So I started to think about it and I'm not really dead set on it but I actually think it might be a great idea ;D

Welcome, Liz!

Like you, I was born in the UK but left when I was a child. I came back in 2003. I can't say whether it's a good idea for you or not, but it definitely was for me!  ;D

I'm still sort of on the fence because it's been so long but I like that I would be closer to my parents and also within a better distance to the rest of Europe. Plus I feel like it'd be a better place to raise my kids for some reason and they liked it a lot (of course were were on holiday so they liked that part the best).

Do you have US citizenship now as well? Some people find moving back to be a bigger struggle and it might be helpful for you to have the option to return to the US if you find that it's not the right fit for your family.

Whole new world for a Southern gardener, but I'm very happy.

Welcome! Your situation is unique to most of us no doubt. Get your US citizenship just in case.
We met in Tokyo through friends when we both lived in Japan.

Last year we moved to Thailand, got our first apartment together, got jobs with the same employer (!), didn't end up killing each other, got married, and decided to move to the UK to settle down.

London, here we come!
