US passport trip for my baby Brit-YANK
« on: March 09, 2011, 09:10:43 AM »
Hi we had a successful trip to the US embassy in February to register our 3 month old baby girl...the wait was long - 4 hours but we applied for her US passport, social security card and certificate of birth abroad...i would recommmend passpic for baby passport pics...i am probably going to use them to renew my US passport later this year...they did have a photobooth at the embassy...

received babies US passport in two weeks and social security card...am waiting for the birth certificate still...i think there is a delay as they are changing the forms...

shes now an official British Yank!!
My home for 18 years since June 2002. Became a citizen 2006

Hi I was wondering if I could ask you how/ where you got the information from.
I'm American, my husband is British and we have a 1 year old son. Our son has his British passport but I'm not sure how to go about getting his US passport,SSN, and Birth Cert. Could you please help me???

Do both parents need to attend?  I am American, my husband is British - can I bring the baby to the Embassy alone or does he need to go as well?  Thanks!

All children under the age of 16 are required to appear at the Embassy or Consulate with both parents for all passport services.  If only one parent is able to attend with the child, please see "Äpplication by One Parent"below.

Application by One Parent:
If only one parent is able to appear, one of the following will be required in addition to forms and documents listed for the passport application:

Form DS-3053 (Statement of Consent) completed by the absent parent must be notarized, within 3 months of the application, before a U.S. Notary Public, British Notary Public, or British Solicitor. The notary or solicitor must place his/her official seal upon the document. American Embassies and Consulates abroad can also notarize Form DS-3053 (Statement of Consent); and one fo the following:
Valid U.S. or foreign passsport or a good notarized photocopy of the identity and signature pages';
Valid driver's license;
Valid militaty id;
Valid U.S. government id;
Certification of Naturalization or Citizenship from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services with photograph; or
Alien Resident Card from USCIS (green card).
Important Notice: the written consent from the non-applying parent that accompanies an application for a new passport must be less than 3 months old.  If not available, you will be required to furnish evidence of the appearing parent's sole authority to apply for the passport in the form of one of the following:

Consular Report of Birth Abroad (Form FS-240) or Certification of Birth Abroad (Form DS-1350) listing only applying parent;
Child's birth certificate listing only applicant parent;
Adoption decree (if applying parent is sole adopting parent);
Court Order granting sole custody to the applying parent (i.e the absent parent has no access to the child.  Child's travel must not be restricted by that order;
Judicial declaration of incompetence of non-applying parent; or
Death certificate of non-applying parent.

Emphasis mine.

From the US Embassy website:  http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/under16.html

We both went last month (both American) and it was fairly painless.  We were in and out -- including waiting in line out front -- in less then 2 hours.  The passport itself and the Consular Report of Birth Abroad turned up in 17 working days.  Still waiting for the social security card/number.

We were well prepared for a much longer wait at the Embassy, but, for us, it was very straightforward.
