Cilantro
« on: May 07, 2011, 01:27:45 PM »
Is it possible to get cilantro here? I couldn't find it fresh or in the dried spices section of my local (Blackburn) Morrisons. When I asked someone in the produce section, she looked at me as if I was speaking Klingon. My MIL says she has never heard of it. Before running all over town searching for something I might not get, I figured I'd see if anyone else has seen it here.

They call it coriander here ;-) which is technically the seed but thats what it is called.  We grew some last year and might even grow some this year!

I have a jar of coriander. The leafy part has such a distinct taste that is different from the lemon-ish taste of the seeds (coriander). I'll check next time I shop and see if I can find it fresh listed as coriander. If not, I might have to try growing some. Thanks! :)

You'll have no trouble finding it fresh.  I use it all the time for my guacamole.  It will be next to the fresh basil and parsley. :)

Thanks everyone! :) I think I will buy some to use next week and grow some for future use. We used to use it at least once a week in the States.

I've never tried growing it on the window sill, but I've had ZERO luck growing it outdoors. I'm usually good with herbs, but I'm a coriander killer.  :-\\\\

chary - we had it outside just in with a blooming tree thing and it was like a weed I tell ya...so I put some in a small pot and put it in the kitchen window and it thrived just as much.
Try it as I know you are handy  ;D

I'm the same. We have pretty green thumbs here, but can't get coriander to grow for the life of us.  It starts out okay, but doesn't last ever.  I finally decided I can get it anywhere for so cheap, it wasn't worth the effort and just continued on with my other herbs.

Yes, coriander and coriander seeds are two different things.  If you end up not wanting to grow it, don't worry. It is available year round and in both small and big bunches.  It is also available dried. The Morrison's brand is cheap and just fine (since that seems to be the store by you).

Now if they had culantro and aji dulces, I'd be a sofrito making fiend.  ;D

It's the one herb we can't grow. We tend to buy the fresh potted coriander from Morrisons and put it in the window sill trying to grow some more and it always dies. Growing from seed hasn't worked either.

I might try it in my Aerogarden, though. Never thought about that.
